Missing Scenes
Pre A New Hope:A Burning Ember Sparks to a Little Flame
If Obi-Wan were asked which was his favourite part of the day, it would be a toss up between falling asleep with Sabé and waking up with her in his arms. It always felt as though everything were right in the galaxy, whether or not they had not had a good day, because in the end they had each other and the support, comfort, and peace they found together.
This morning was no different.
It wasn't much longer after Sabé awoke that Obi-Wan stirred from a restful night's sleep. Though he had noticed a few days ago that something had changed with Sabé, as her Force signature seemed to read differently to him, he was unable to place exactly what it was. However, this feeling of change was nowhere near unpleasant and sensing it brought a joy to him that was unfathomable.
He smiled sleepily at her as he opened his eyes. 'G'morning,' he murmured, running his free hand through her hair.
Sabé noted Obi-Wan stirring and couldn't help but giggle softly at his sleepy smile as he opened his eyes. At his words and gentle touch she leaned up and nuzzled her nose against his as she grinned.
"G'morning to you my sleepy love."
She said gently before giving him a gentle squeeze as she shifted slightly in his arms to get more comfortable.
"I hope moments like this never end."
She murmured softly as she gave a contented smile.
Obi-Wan closed his eyes briefly again after they both shifted to get more comfortable. He brushed the hair from her eyes before kissing her brow.
'Ah but if they didn't end would you appreciate them as much?' he teased, matching her smile as his hand then moved to her waist, his thumb stroking her side.
Someone else was awakening too, though it took awhile for Obi-Wan to notice. As he slowly woke up completely, he noticed that it wasn't just that Sabé felt different, it was that he was registering two Force signatures.
A look of shock passed over his face as he considered the possibilities. Was she--could she be--did she know--
Sabé bowed her head as he brushed back the hair from her eyes and kissed her brow. Her eyes danced at his teasing as she grinned returning the teasing as she raised a brow in amusement.
"Why would you rather they end so you could appriciate them more?"
She giggled as his hand slipped to her waist as it was a more ticklish position but soon he found a more comfortable angle and she relaxed to his gentle touch. Reaching up Sabé moved to touch his cheek as she moved about to give him a quick kiss before noting the look of shock on his features.
Her eyes instantly turned concerned as she wondered if he had seen a vision or if he sensed something wrong in the Force.
"Obi-Wan? Is something wrong?"
She asked gently as she studied his features the look of concern evident on hers.
'Very funny, Mrs. Kenobi,' he replied.
At his revelation, he took in the little alterations to the weaker but nonetheless present life signature and recalled the prophetic dreams he had had about a daughter. He temporarily forgot that those dreams had ceased after her confrontation with Vader as he was overwhelmed with joy and excitement.
Her question drew him from his thoughts. 'Sabé...something's different. Can you feel it?'
His smile grew wider and he couldn't help exclaiming, 'You're-- We're going to have a baby!'
Sabé laughed to his reply though her cheeks warmed slightly. Even now it still made her heart skip a beat to hear her proper title used. It wasn't something she ever dreamed would become a reality but more of a wishful fancy but it was real and it left her more than a little humble and touched by the fact she had been so blessed.
At his shocked expression these thoughts faded and Sabé became more serious concerned perhaps that he had seen something in a vision. But his words caused her to furrow her brow in curiousity. She had felt something different, but nothing specific or in particular.
"I'm not sure what you mean Obi-Wan; I mean outside of waking up in good spirits I really don't sense anything in -"
She never did finish the sentance as Obi-Wan's smile widened as he exclaimed the last thing she'd ever expect him to say in that moment. Blinking in surprise Sabé was rendered speachless for a moment as her mind suddenly whirled. We're having a baby? I'm pregnant? How could he know when I- Is that the sense of anticipation I felt when I awoke is? The thoughts went from confused to joyous as her eyes began to light up as a smile grew on her features.
"You are certain? How do you know? Can you sense it?"
She whispered in humble awe before pulling him into a tight hug as Sabé was no longer able to resist the rush of joy that poured over her.
"My gods Obi-Wan this is such wonderful news!!"
She exclaimed eagerly feeling so blessed by this wonderful discovery.
Obi-Wan took in her shock and then the immense joyed that followed which mirrored his own. He eagerly hugged her back and couldn't resist kissing her instead of answering her questions straightaway.
After the kiss, he lightly brushed his nose against hers, grinning. 'I felt something a few days ago, but I couldn't place,' he admitted.
He looked down at the hand he had placed on her waist. 'But this morning, something wonderful happened. I picked up on it--a second Force signature. Are you certain you can't sense it?' He met her eyes once more. 'I'll bet you can...unless it's too similiar to your own perhaps?'
Blushing he admitted, 'I'm afraid I don't have a lot of experience with this sort of thing...'
Sabé was thrilled beyond comprehension and Obi-Wan's reaction to her questions suited her mood perfectly. Returning his kiss eagerly she gave him a squeeze through her already tight hug before giggling as he brushed his nose against her.
"A few days ago? Goodness you're far more intune with these things than I am and I'm the one carrying the child!"
She exclaimed as she laughed softly her eyes dancing in the joy that even now poured off of her. As his eyes met hers she furrowed her brow slightly at his question.
"I'm not sure I've never tried such a thing before. To be honest I didn't even know one could sense a life signature this early one."
Sabé admitted shyly as her cheeks warmed much like Obi-Wan's as he admitted to his lack of experience which caused her to touch his cheek in shy admiration.
"I wouldn't worry too much about it Obi-Wan, this is quite new to me too."
This was all so unreal and amazing to Obi-Wan. Had someone asked him a year ago where he thought his life would be, it most certainly wouldn't have entered his mind that he would be happily married to the other half of his soul and expecting a child. Their child...
As a Jedi he had never thought of the possibility of having his own children though he knew some that would sleep with a woman, but not commit to them, that was something he couldn't do. Over fourteen years ago he had met Sabé and since then, he never thought of another with whom he would rather be with though at the time such things had not been possible.
Obi-Wan was unable to stop smiling and as she admitted it was new to her too, he said, 'We'll just have to figure it out together.' He wondered if there were any specific Nabooan traditiondm but thought there would be time enough.
This was even more beautiful than any dream and Sabé was beyond humbled by it. Part of her feared that she would wake in a moment's notice and discover this was but a dream but it was real, so real and it almost made her giddy with joy.
Holding Obi-Wan close she grinned and couldn't resist giving his cheek a kiss as she felt his own joy mingling with hers. She was taught at a young age that family bred harmony but never could she have fully comprehend it until this moment. Even with all the evil that now filled the universe on this small dusty planet a small ray of light was growing and with it such hope and peace that Sabé would never forget.
Stirring from her thoughts Sabé giggled to Obi-Wan's reply and gave a contented sigh.
"I just know I'm going to enjoy every minute of it."
She murmured in contentment unawares that small ray of light was never meant to grace this universe of darkness with its presense.
'We'll have to do something to celebrate,' he said, thinking aloud. 'But first, why don't I fix us something to eat for breakfast?'
Obi-Wan at least knew enough about younglings that the mother would have to eat plenty of the right sorts of vitamins and minerals in order to provide for the baby. He made a mental note to get some higher protein food items the next time they went to town.
They would have to start planning for the little one's room and purchase a cot. No doubt Sabé would have all the decorating under control since she had already done so well with their home...despite the one particularly ugly vase which she had chosen just to tease him for his lack of participation.
"We definately have much to celebrate about."
She replied with a joyous smile as her eyes danced before sitting up at Obi-Wan's remarks about the immediate matter of breakfast.
"Now that sounds like a wonderful idea, I'll get some tea started and help you out."
Sabé said feeling more than a little excited as her thoughts immediately began to turn to the preparations to make for their little one to be. There was so much that would need to be done and yet it would be so wonderful to do it.
"You know we're going to have to start preparing for the little one's arrival. I'm not sure where to start looking for the supplies we're going to need but I imagine Mrs.Darklighter will be able to guide us to the right places."
She couldn't resist giggling as she imagined the older woman's response upon learning she was with child.
"Although I can only imagine her reaction when she learns we're expecting a baby."
They sat up simultaneously and was about to express that he was more than willing to prepare breakfast without help if she wanted or needed to rest (as he was unsure about the idiosyncrasies of pregnancy), but she had offered to prepare tea and he wasn't about to begrudge her that.
'And she would be the perfect person to ask,' he replied, recalling how she had reacted upon learning he was going to propose to Sabé.
'Ecstatic would be the word, I think...' he replied, grinning as he moved towards the kitchen. 'I can't wait to belabour her with all of my questions. I haven't the slightest about infants. Nine I can handle, but I don't know anything about babies...'
A flash of concern appeared in his expression and he stopped midstride. He faced Sabé, worried. 'What if I'm a terrible father? I don't even remember mine. Qui-Gon was the closest I had to a father and I only began training with him when I was thirteen--'
Sabé grinned confirming her agreement to Obi-Wan's words as she slipped out of bed and grabbed her housecoat. Following him to the kitchen she laughed at his initial reply about Mrs.Darklighter's reaction to the news before turning more gentle as he admitted he had many questions.
"I think if anything she'd be dissappointed if you didn't ask a million questions. Besides I know I won't be much better myself so you're not alone."
She added with a wink before furrowing her brow as he stopped suddenly and faced her. His expression filled with concern and his words caused her heart to ache for him. While she understood his doubts Sabé couldn't think of another more worthy of bearing the title of father.
Approaching him Sabé slipped her arms around the Jedi Master as she stared up at him with loving eyes.
"Obi-Wan you have nothing to worry about; I know you're going to be a wonderful father. In truth, I can't think of anyone more worthy to bear such a title as you."
She said gently as she reached up to touch his cheek.
Despite himself, his thoughts briefly darted to darker territory thinking on Anakin and how he had failed him as a teacher and brother. Even though he had successfully forgiven himself for this and let go of the guilt, it was something that would no doubt haunt him for the rest of his life.
In his mind, since their final battle, he had begun thinking of Anakin and Vader as two separate people. He had to. Anakin and he had been such good comrades and partners in the Outer Rim Sieges. They had had so many successful missions and their bond had never been stronger. He had not failed him. Anakin had failed himself.
As she wrapped her arms around him and touched his cheek, Obi-Wan looked into her eyes and both saw and felt the assurance and confidence she held for him. How he loved this woman!
'I just hadn't ever expected nor thought about the possibility before,' he said a bit sheepishly. 'But I have to admit I want to be a good father more than anything!'
Sabé didn't need to ask what is was that was causing Obi-Wan to doubt and second guess his abilities for it was clear in his eyes that his thoughts had turned to the past. It saddened her to think that even though none of this was his fault the memories would return to shadow his thoughts.
Even so she would not let the darkness of the past cloud this joyous moment and she didn't hesitate to speak the truth. Obi-Wan truly would be a wonderful father and to Sabé this wasn't so much a possibility, but a fact. Her eyes shone as she spoke these words wanting him to know that she truly believed her words. That she knew their child would be so loved and that she also knew the baby would love their father more than anything.
At his sheepish reply she couldn't help but pull him into a full embrace as Sabé wished she could calm his doubts and erase his concerns. Even so she couldn't help but feel her heart warm at his words and Sabé gave him a squeeze as she gazed back up at him with a warm smile.
"I was once told that no amount of study can fully prepare one to become a parent for it is a lesson that is only taught by a child."
Sabé said remembering her mother's words to Leesol who was just as concerned about being a good mother as Obi-Wan was about being a father.
"And I know you will be the greatest pupil there ever was."
She added as she stood on the balls of her feet to lightly rub her nose against his before giving him a quick kiss.
"You'll just have to trust me on this one."
She added with a wink.
Thoughts of Anakin, which had formerly threatened to eat away at him, dissolving his own light, had now become a thing of the past. Despite ongoing war, the Imperial forces, and all the hatred in the galaxy, this was a bright spot, a light, a spark that would become a flame of hope, just as the twins would one day become beacons of Light.
'A lesson I am more than eager to learn,' he replied, his grin slowly returning.
Sabé gave him a kiss and that was all it took for him to resume smiling broadly. He couldn't help it. And he felt the little spark was joyful as well. Or it could have just been Sabé's joy he felt. It was all so powerful and the little one was so tiny it was much more difficult to discern, but he was happy to believe what he felt was the little one's joy as well.
Obi-Wan took her hand and kissed it before moving to fetch the assortment of items he'd need for fixing breakfast. 'I know a trip into town will be in order,' he said with a grin. 'For essentials and breaking the news to your employer...and so we can tell everyone we happen by that we're expecting!' he exclaimed, then sobered, adding, 'if you don't mind, of course...'
Sabé smiled eagerly to his reply grateful to see his smile returning.
"That makes two of us."
She said with a giggle before giving him a quick kiss. Everything just felt perfect with the universe in that moment. Though Sabé couldn’t be certain she felt something, she could sense a hint of another life within. It was subtle and in truth had Obi-Wan not asked her if she felt anything Sabé might have just shrugged it off as another sense of instinct. But it was real and it filled her with much joy.
As Obi-Wan kissed her hand which caused her cheeks to warm slightly before moving to grab the items needed for breakfast which reminded Sabé of the tea she promised she would brew. Moving to grab some fresh tea leaves and prepare a small pot of water, Sabé caught Obi-Wan’s words and beamed at the thought. This would be one trip to town she was looking forward to. Although Sabé knew that Obi-Wan would be a bit sheepish if not embarrassed by Mrs. Darklighter’s excited reaction she knew he was just as eager to share the news with them as she was.
Yet at his conclusion of sharing the news with everyone and anyone Mos Eisley Sabé couldn’t help but laugh softly finding his exuberance to be both amusing and endearing.
“I’m not sure how strangers will react if you just go up to them to announcing you’re going to be a father.”
Sabé teased as her eyes danced in amusement before adding with a wink.
“Although it would be amusing to watch.”
'I wouldn't want to forego a chance to amuse you,' he replied with a wink.
Though of course he had more tact than going up to perfect strangers and announcing their joyful news, he felt as though he wanted the whole universe to know, as impossible and impractical as that would be.
Obi-Wan already appreciated so much of the rewards being a husband to Sabé issued that the news just furthered his happiness to the extent of which he hadn't even fathomed existed before.
'You should be the one to tell them though, the Darklighters, I mean,' he said as he began fixing breakfast.
Sabé laughed softly to his reply as she pulled out a couple of cups and spoons for their tea.
"I think watching Mrs.Darklighter pulling you into one of her famous bearhugs upon learning the news will be amusement enough for me."
She teased with a grin knowing the older woman's eager excitement over the news was certain to make Obi-Wan blush. Glancing back to him she noticed he was missing one of the ingredients and moved to the Refrigeration unit to grab it for him.
For a moment she paused and watched Obi-Wan her expression turning thoughtful. Sabé soon found herself imagining what it would be like to have a little one running around the house. To watch as his or her eyes fill with curiousity to all the little things they had long since took for granted. She could almost see Obi-Wan braiding their daughters long hair or teaching their son how to build forts out of cushions. She felt her heart warm at the thought as a wistful sigh escaped her lips.
But soon his remarks pulled her from her fanciful daydreams as she gently laid a hand on his shoulder and smiled.
"If its alright with you Obi-Wan I would like to tell them together. They are after all as much your friends as mine."
'Oh just meant when we go there together,' he said a bit sheepishly. 'I thought you would like to do the honours.'
Obi-Wan grinned at his wife, having a feeling he would be all smiles for a good while because of this blessing.
He knew he would have a lot of questions for the Darklighters too and hoped they might have some tips or literature he could read up on. He wanted to be a good father and honestly didn't know where to begin.
As the breakfast came together, with Sabé's help, the plates were filled and the tea was poured. His thoughts drifted to those dreams he had had before, though still not aware when he stopped having them, nor the significance of it. 'We'll have to think of names,' he said offhandedly before taking a sip of tea. 'And this table will need another chair, although I don't think younglings use the same sort of chairs...'
Sabé blushed deeply to his words though her eyes sparkled as she touched his cheek.
"Actually I though you might want to share the news."
She admitted a little shyly. Sabé figured since she already had the pleasure of being able to carry their child that it was only fair that Obi-Wan be able to share the news.
Yet as they prepared their breakfast Sabé found her thoughts being filled with questions. There was so much she knew she'd have to learn in order to be able to be fully prepared for their little one. It was an excited prospect and yet it was a little bittersweet as well. For this sort of thing was normally reserved for mother's to teach their daughters. But with her mother now in the realms of Harmony Sabé found herself more than a little grateful for Mrs.Darklighter's presense. If anyone could teach her the things she needed to know it would be her.
As they set the table and did the last preparations for breakfast Sabé found her attention returning to the present. Taking a seat she caught Obi-Wan's words about thinking of names and eagerly smiled at the thought.
"I can't wait, are there any in particular you have in mind?
"Unless you would rather wait till we learn if the child is to be a boy or girl first?"
She added as she blushed not wanting him to feel rushed and yet eager to begin. But at his remarks about the table needing a new chair for their little one Sabé felt her heart swell once more. The thought was almost overwhelming instinctivally her hand slipped to Obi-Wan's as her eyes shone.
"Its going to be so wonderful Obi-Wan. Can you just picture it? Our child, a little youngling, seated in their high chair playing with their bottle and in time their food."
Sabé giggled at the thoughts as she continued.
"I know its going to be a bit messy, because toddlers always like to get their fingers into everything, but its going to be so wonderful all the same."
'To be honest, I think I will have a hard time keeping the news to myself,' he replied, practically beaming as they finished preparing their meal.
Once seated and beginning to eat, he was about to reply that he hadn't thought of names yet as he had only been sure that she was with child this morning. But then she remarked about the child's sex and this brought memories of the dreams he had to the forefront of his thoughts once more. Obi-Wan had been thinking of their little one as a girl and was surprised he hadn't said so, though he of course was unsure if the dreams were prophetic or not.
It would not be long before he would know for sure.
'Would you want to know before birth?' he had to ask because he could try not to register such information or at least keep it from her if she didn't want to know...well, he could try.
He squeezed her hand in response as he looked to a vacant area of the table where a child's seat could be placed. He had a more difficult time seeing it than Sabé, but assumed it was because she had more experience in that area with her sister and her children.
Sabé laughed softly at Obi-Wan's words as just watching him looking so happy warmed her heart like nothing else.
"I don't blame you, I'm practically bubbling with joy myself."
She admitted sheepishly as she set the food onto the table before joining. As he asked if she'd want to know what the child's sex would be Sabé couldn't resist a grin.
"At one time I would have said I wouldn't want to know till birth. But to be perfectly honest I think my curiousity would get the better of me."
She said as she giggled.
"I guess either way you will know because of their Force signature? I wonder whatelse you will be able to sense as they grow..."
She pondered outloud as she turned curious at the thought. She couldn't help but wonder if the little one would be able to in its own way communicate basic emotions with him or if that would be too early yet. As he squeezed her hand Sabé's smile widened as she squeezed his hand back.
"I have never been so blessed as I have been since you came into my life."
She whispered softly feeling a rush of peace and joy pour over her. This was almost too good to be real and it was humbling to think of how fortunate she truly was.
He was relieved when Sabé said she probably would be too curious to be able to wait until the baby was born to know which sex it was. With all the new revelations he expected he would sense as the child grew, it would be extremely hard to keep such things from her and to be honest, he didn't want to.
His thoughts drifted for a moment to Qui-Gon as he considered Force bonds and their formation. It was significantly different from the one he had with Sabé, which had always felt like a reconnection than a beginning of a new. His with Qui-Gon had built slowly and that's how he perceived this current connect to be forming.
'I-I don't know,' he replied, grinning. 'I might be able to tell, I might not...'
Her following words humbled him as her contented joy shown radiantly in her visage and through the Force. Obi-Wan's thumb rolled over the top of her hand as he looked deep into her eyes. His own eyes shone with such gratitude and love that there were no proper words to convey the extent of his feelings.
Sabé could sense his relief and was unable to resist a grin. It was ironic the two of them as excited as children on the day of their ascension all the while expecting a child of their own.
Sabé studied Obi-Wan for a moment just observing and enjoying the joy he felt that mirrored her own. He really did complete her in so many ways Sabé knew she couldn't fully comprehend. It was humbling to say the least and yet she wouldn't trade it for anything in the universe.
At his words she couldn't help but give his hand another squeeze as her eyes danced in amused excitement.
"I can't wait till the little one is bigger. I wonder if he or she will be able to express basic emotions through the Force the way we can."
Her eyes shone at the thought as she stared at her husband in silent and peaceful joy.
"I wonder when the little one is a bit bigger if it will be able to sense your presense. I wonder if perhaps it comprehends even that now that it's Daddy is near."
She pondered in wistful tones unaware that already the little spark was more than able to sense that it's Daddy was near or the fact that it knew things were at peace with its parents. While it was far too young to comprehend the deeper meanings of this it sense the aura of peace radiating from its Mother and FAther and was at peace itself for it.
But on the surface Sabé remained unaware as instead she found herself growing lost in Obi-Wan's blue orbs which mirrored the love and humble gratitude that lingered in her own amber orbs. Her own thumb gently rubbed his hand as a loving smile graced her lips. Though neither spoke a word a million thoughts were conveyed. For such was the bond between them, forged by love, and strengthened with time.
At the thought of their child already growing within Sabé, he couldn't help being giddy with the prospect of being able to sense the changes and growth as the little one drew closer to the actual birth.
When Sabé mentioned the possibility that their child would be Force sensitive, he thought back to his own youth, trying to remember what it was like to first learn of the Force and how it worked. 'I was taught that Force sensitivity passes from the father; I don't see why they wouldn't be able to sense us if they were Force sensitive...' But of course there is always the chance that their little one wouldn't be, but Obi-Wan didn't know for sure as this was all so new to him.
Whilst still holding her hand, he closed his eyes to reach out to the little one who was far too young to be able to know what it was feeling, but Obi-Wan sensed it was content, especially after being fed. The thought that perhaps in time it would be able to reach out to them in its own way warmed his heart. He had never experienced such a thing, but even just the thought of it was wonderful.
Though he lacked confidence, experience, and knowledge in parenting skills, from the look in Sabé's eyes, which mirrored his own, he knew without a doubt that this child would be loved and sometimes, only that truly mattered. For the rest would come with time. And for Sabé and him, time was something that had only increased their bond as it would no doubt do the same for their child whom they were both more than eager to see brought into the world.
Sabé's eyes danced in gentle joy to his words as she reached out to touch his cheek.
"Then it would seem our little one will no doubt be trying to communicate with it's Daddy in time."
She said softly finding this to be humbling and exciting at the same time. As he closed his eyes she fell silent watching him in curiousity wondering if their little one could sense what its Daddy was doing. She wondered if she would in time come to feel the little one reaching out in due time. She smiled at the thought as she found herself studying Obi-Wan once more. To think they would have a little one to care for, to raise and to love it was beyond wonderful. Sabé knew that whatever future was ahead for their little one they would always be loved and with it this thought came a realization that this too would bring about a new sense of completion for them. Or as the Naboo would refer to it the circles of harmony.
