Post Revenge of the Sith: I Have Failed You
It had been nearly a year since his arrival on Tatooine, delivering Senator Padmé Amidala’s firstborn into the hands of his aunt and uncle. Still overcome with penitence and grief over the loss of his former padawan, Obi-Wan had learnt to commune with the spirit of his former master, though he didn’t feel he was progressing as he should. The irony that Qui-Gon said he needed to be patient, that guilt and grief would ebb away in time, only caused it to sting all the more. He had so often rebuked Anakin for his lack of patience.
He'd been attatched to Anakin as well. That's what had blinded him from sensing earlier on that the boy had turned to the Dark Side. Or had it been merely Palpatine, Darth Sidious?
One act alone does not cause a Jedi to become lost. It is not stumbled onto by accident. It is a choice.
Those words he'd said to Master Windu now seemed ironic. Surely Anakin's fall had been his fault.
He'd only been off Tatooine once since arriving. In that time, he confronted and defeated another Sith Lord.
‘Step aside, Jedi.’
Clutching his lightsaber defiantly, Obi-Wan stood his ground. ‘This is a peaceful village. We don't want any trouble.’ The rain continued falling at a steady pace.
The Dark Jedi reached out towards him, saying, ‘I call upon the power of the Sith!’ he cried, lightning shooting outwards.
Obi-Wan blocked the attack. Flashes of light darted out, the fog inhibiting his sight. Other cloaked figures were on either side of him. Obi-Wan took out his two unarmed accomplices with ease. The Dark Jedi’s distractions, using the Force to toss logs and boulders at his opponent, failed to make a difference as Obi-Wan agilely deflected them. Their lightsabers met, blue on red. The energy of the Dark Jedi’s manipulation of the Force invaded Obi-Wan's thoughts, trying to convince him it was futile, that he would lose…that all would be lost.
Delving into the Jedi's mind, the Sith Lord saw his late padawan, Anakin Skywalker, now Darth Vader. He saw the disappointment, the fear, and used it to his advantage. Dark Force lightning flashed through the fog.
Then the red blade shot forward aimed for Obi-Wan's throat, but with his superior lightsaber skills, he dodged to the left, slicing at the Sith Lord's hand.
‘Don't make me kill you.’
‘Anakin, my allegiance is to the Republic, to democracy!’
‘If you are not with me, then you are my enemy.’
‘Only a Sith deals in absolutes. I will do what I must.’
When the Jedi missed, the Dark Jedi cackled, ‘Surely you can do better!’
Obi-Wan swerved around, avoiding another attack and came at him again.
The Sith Lord parried and thrust before releasing another wave of Dark Force lightning.
Obi-Wan's blade blocked the lightning as the Dark Jedi lashed out with several critical strikes.
With each blocked attack, the Dark Jedi mocked him. ‘It’s a wonder Vader let you live this long.’ He brought forth waves of the most recent painful memories.
‘You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them. You were to bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness!’
‘I hate you!’
‘You were my brother, Anakin.’
Obi-Wan fought against the memories, struggling to remain in the here and now as his blade once again met with the Sith Lord’s.
‘I HATE YOU!’
The Dark Jedi rapidly came at Obi-Wan with a hard chop, but the Jedi parried and spun, cutting at the Sith Lord with the backslash. The Dark Lord blocked the strike, but Obi-Wan took his spilt second of uncertainty to slice the Sith Lord in half.
‘I HATE YOU!’ Anakin's voice echoed in his head as he fell to his knees. His lightsaber turned off automatically as it dropped next to him, abandoned. He couldn't help the tears coming to his eyes as he knelt there, head bowed over the mangled body of the Sith Lord in the mud. ‘I've failed. I’ve failed you...’ He saw Anakin crawling with his mechanised arm, clawing at the rocks on Mustafar, hate brimming in his eyes. Spitting, snarling, cursing him...
Even now the dreams of their last confrontation haunted him. Qui-Gon's assurances that Anakin willfully made the decision to turn did nothing to help Obi-Wan's guilt and without overcoming this overwhelming guilt, he would not be able to resume his own training with the spirit of his former master.
He should have seen the signs earlier. He should have listened to Sabé when she insisted she felt a darkness from his former padawan.
Your former padawan carries a great darkness within. No one else seems to notice this, but I do... If being a Jedi means everything to him, Obi-Wan, why is he so eager to break the oaths that binds him to the Order? Why is he so willing to throw it all away?
Ah, Sabé... he sighed.
Thoughts of her were filled with an aching he couldn't put a name to. He prayed Anakin--Vader--hadn't killed her too. She had been right all along. Why hadn't he listened? His attachment to Anakin had blinded him from sensing his fall, but wasn't such an attachment to Sabé equally as dangerous?
I think you're letting your emotions blind you, Obi-Wan. Which is saying alot, all things considered.
No matter how much he thought about it, he concluded that Sabé was not in any way a path to darkness and that, ironically, was the key. Was it possible his feelings were in fact blinding him even now? That he was merely in denial?
But I kissed her... I liked kissing her... How many years had we both dreamt of it?
Obi-Wan ran a hand through his hair with a despondent sigh. None of it mattered anymore. He had failed her whom he had come to have strong feelings for, despite how he failed to admit it. He had failed Padmé whom Sabé had sworn her life to protect. He had failed Anakin as a mentor, friend, and brother.
It seemed everything was falling apart around him and he moved through life like a mere shadow of the Jedi Master he once was.
The funeral procession was as beautiful as one could imagine though she was not there to witness it. She knew without question the solemn parade would lead her Queen, her sister and best friend to the great River of Solleu where she would be transformed to ashes and quietly laid to rest in the massive body of water. For it is said that the river would always keep a part of her spirit amongst her people.
Though she missed the funeral itself because of the need for security, she found herself grateful, for either way she would not have been there unless duty demanded it of her. For she preferred to mourn quietly away from the public eye.
Yet hours later, Sabé still found herself visiting the small mausoleum that was erected in her memory earlier in the day. The former decoy knew she shouldn’t be here for it is too dangerous yet she could not bring herself to leave without paying respect to her to the one she had dedicated her life to serve. Quietly bowing at the entrance steps as per tradition Sabé soon entered and was greeted by the soft glowing light of numerous candles. The queen’s still form rested in the middle of the room and it was almost too easy to imagine Padmé was only sleeping. But Sabé knew better and within ten standard hours there would be nothing of left of Padme’s shell save for ashes.
The words of the Captain still linger in her mind and she found herself once more reminded of it. Sabé had expected the worst, for she was already aware of the Jedi Temple's destruction, the slaughtering of its inhabitants though upon learning that even the younglings weren’t spared had left her speechless. But it was only the beginning. She soon learnt that with the birth of the new Empire, all and any who dared to speak against the Emperor save for those of political importance were removed. Amongst them were almost all of her fellow handmaidens. Had Sabé not been attending to a rather private meeting that the Senator herself insisted, she too would have been amongst the casualties.
Yet even now little is known of what exactly had occurred during those fateful days. Even during her last discussion with Padmé very little light was shed concerning the situation at hand. Sabé was told by a rather distraught Padme that she had to speak to Anakin before he went to stop the Separatists. Apparently it was a matter of vital importance, and though Sabé tried to stop her from going saying it was too dangerous her lady was determined. Even then the former decoy tried to accept her decision saying that she if she could not convince her to refrain then as her principle handmaiden she would join her. But Padme was fiercely adamant about the matter to the point of making it an order that she should remain behind and instead attend a rather import and extremely classified meeting. So the handmaiden obeyed and in doing so watched first hand as everything she loved and cared for be destroyed one by one.
Drawing herself from the dark memories the former decoy gingerly places a hand over the cold still palm that was once her friend’s. Closing her eyes Sabé wills herself not to weep; she had to be strong in this dark hour for weakness could not be tolerated. Yet the guilt and shame is overpowering and despite her strength the tears begin to collect in her eyes and trickle down her cheeks.
“…My dear friend how I have failed you. How I failed all of you.
I am so sorry.”
She whispered softly to ears that can no longer hear her words. She had failed them all. Not only Padmé she thinks miserably, but Obi-Wan too and worse, Anakin.
How she had hated Jedi Skywalker believing him to be the shame of the Jedi Order even so much as to be convinced he was falling prey to darkness. How desperately she tried to warn her dear friends of this, hoping to separate them from what she had believed to be a dire threat in the making. Yet the Jedi Knight had died in the most heroic way imaginable. Proving to Sabé that he held far more honor and loyalty then she had ever given him credit for.
Though she knew little of the battle that occurred on Mustafar what she had learnt revealed enough. The entire mission had been but a trap and Anakin along with Obi-Wan had fallen prey to it as she had been informed. Which lead to the conclusion that Padme had unwittingly become the bait. Why else would she have been placed in a position that forced her to locate Anakin in the first place?
The creature that she knew only as Darth Vader had obviously planned their demise with meticulous care and had executed it just as she had imagined he planned. The Jedi knight she had learnt from Captain Typho was sent to Mustafar to remove the last of the Separatists and destroy the new menace that is rumored to be the Emperor’s second in command. But in the end he was the one destroyed. Killed by a butcher of children and the innocent, while trying to protect a Queen and preserve what little was good left in the galaxy. A more noble and honorable death Sabé could not imagine. She had misjudged the rogue-like Jedi terribly and now this too weighs heavy on her mind.
But nothing could prepare her for the news of Obi-Wan’s death. Even after all that had happened, all that she had learnt, Sabé still held onto the hope that her dear friend had escaped this wrath of chaos and darkness. Yet even this proved to be too grand a wish. For only earlier that evening she received word that the Jedi Master’s life was taken during the revolt of the Clones.
It is this thought that finally breaks the last of her powerful walls as the tears that barely stream down her cheeks turn into heart wrenching sobs.
What do you know about loss Sabé?...You don't know what its like to lose everything you've ever loved and cared for. To know that in a heartbeat it could all disappear and crumble away…
As her body shook with sobs of pain and sorrow the words of the Jedi Knight echoed in her mind and for the first time she truly understood what it was like to feel utterly lost and alone.
It had been at just under a year since her entire world had fallen apart. About as long since she had felt a good night's sleep or been able to fully relax without feeling the intense guilt to move onwards, to keep working until she was on the verge of collapsing. It was how she always dealt with pain and sorrow before throwing herself into her work with such fervency that she had no time left to think of her pain. Usually it worked and it earned her the name of being one of Naboo's coldest and detached as Rabe once said. The memory of her friend caused Sabé to closed her eyes as though forcibly burying the thought. Even now after all this time the former decoy and handmaiden could still feel pieces of her soul dying a little each day. Her life had ceased to carry any meaning, and it was only out of her desire to uphold all the democracy and peace the late Senator and Queen of Naboo had fought so hard to achieve that Sabé even had the will to continue onward.
Since that fateful day when Padme almost commanded her to be involved in a rather classified and highly private meeting with members of the Senate, Sabé had learnt much. She was personally hand chosen and represented by the Senator herself to be one of the newest recruits in an infant but already highly secretive organization known simply as “The Alliance.” It wasn’t much of a resistance to be certain, for it only contained a very small, (little more then a handful) of concerned politicians seeking to maintain and keep the ways of the Republic and democracy itself. She knew they needed more then that and for all their good intentions none were really trained or skilled for this sort of thing. It had then become painfully clear why she and later as she learnt Saché and Captain Typho were chosen to rise to the task.
Now she worked around the clock keeping up appearances as a nameless black-market merchant, all the while serving this new underground movement in any way possible. Which was why she was here in now on her way to a dusty and long forgotten planet on the outskirts of the outer rim, Tatooine was said to be her next destination for contact and ever the loyal servant Sabé did not question it. However it didn’t mean she had to like it and given the shocking and terrible revelation discovered only a day earlier she couldn’t help but feel more then a little apprehensive of the situation at hand.
But with this thought comes another rush of fury and once more she was lost to the past.
“M’Lady I’m glad you could come on such short notice.”
Nandi’s voice though steady did little to hide the concern that was written all over her face or Teckla who stood nearby as Sabé silently entered the now vacant home of her former Queen. She didn’t want to come back here in truth for the memories are still fresh still painful and it hurt to even find herself approaching the building from a far. But she didn’t know when her paths would lead her to Naboo again and even without the former handmaiden’s rather unsettling call Sabé was certain she would have return. If not for anything than to pay homage to her dear friend’s memory. However as fate would have it she just happened to be on Naboo delivering another message to another of their few contacts when the urgent call was put through to her.
“What exactly happened?”
Sabé inquired noting the smashed crystal vase and inwardly feels a pang of sadness at it. It was one of Padmé’s favorites, a gift from the former Queen Jamilla upon Padmé’s resignation and acceptance to be a Senator. Stepping forward the normally shy Teckla quiet explains what she had witnessed leaving Sabé more then a little disturbed and fearful. How did Darth Vader know of Padme’s hidden lake home? Even more unsettling what was his purpose here? It wasn’t like she kept anything of political importance in this place, for this was her sanctuary and home to where she was to raise Anakin and her child.
As if reading her thoughts Nandi quietly motions her to follow her eyes now filled with confusion as she quietly remarks.
“But this isn’t all my lady. Please come with us. There is something you must see.”
Nodding slightly Sabé followed them as they lead her upstairs to the child’s room feeling her heart sink to her feet. By the gods, please say that monster had the decency not to desecrate and destroy the baby’s room she inwardly hoped before staring in stunned silence at the perfectly kept and untouched room.
“…I don’t understand.”
Nandi nods slightly as she moves to the crib revealing a beautiful and very well crafted ring of roses to which is gingerly placed into her hands.
“…Teckla found this, after Lord Vader left. Nothing else was touched.”
Her ground beneath her feet began to spin violently as Sabé stared at the delicate wreath knowing its meaning and realizing to her horror what it all meant. For it was a Naboo custom one that was always made by expectant parents and upon completion left hanging by or over their baby’s crib. It represented the greatest and most powerful circle of the six walls of order, the never-ending cycle of a family’s love.
But it also meant one more thing. One very important detail she had never even considered or ever dared to consider.
Darth Vader was the father of Padmé’s children, which was instantly followed by another train of thought. One that literally leaves her feeling as though her legs had turned to jelly while her veins turned to lava.
Darth Vader is none other than Anakin.
“Teckla, Nandi I want you both to leave this place immediately and do not return.”
She said in deadly quiet tones to which they stare at her in disbelief.
“That is an order.”
She hissed her voice unnaturally fierce as the two handmaidens stare at her in confusion and fear before promptly bowing and turning to leave.
Now just a few hours ago she learnt her fears weren’t unfounded as one of her contacts informed her that the Senator’s home had been destroyed, burnt to the ground later that evening. Sabé knew without question what the monster that was once Anakin was trying to do and though try as she may she could not find it in her heart to pity him. He brought it all on himself and he had no one to blame but himself.
Butcher of children, murderer of the innocent. May your name forever be stained by the blood you’ve spilled Anakin; may the gods curse your every breath and your every action. So that there is nothing left of your soul when you pass to the otherworld but shards of discord. She thinks as the blind wave of fury pours over her once more.
Closing her eyes once more Sabé takes a deep breath calming her shattered nerves and pulling her back to the present once more. Opening her eyes again the former decoy quietly reminds herself of the silent promise she had swore upon regaining her composure some time later.
I swear on my loyalty and duty to Queen Amidala, I will continue to do all in my power to uphold the freedom, justice and democracy she dedicated her life to serve.
I will avenge the innocent lives that have been so needlessly slaughtered by your hands, Anakin and I will take back what you have so mercilessly stolen from the people and from myself.
Whether in this life or the next I will not know peace until this has come to pass. So it is said so it will be done.
Yet even though the words brought her new determination it was still hard to maintain a calm appearance as she decided to take the incredible and looking back now, foolish risk to approach Queen Breya and leave the wreath of roses in her care. The queen was gracious enough to accept it and even more wise not to ask where they came from.
Now only hours later Sabé found herself well on her way to Tatooine, to the planet where it all began. Both the good and the bad. Closing her eyes she tried once more to drift into some sort of semblance of sleep as the ship remains in auto-pilot for the moment. As she hopes against hope that perhaps this time rest will come without the nightmares that now plague her. But she knew it was only wishful thinking for long gone were the days of sweet dreams filled with a handsome Jedi Master and Knight leaving only images of a dark foreboding presence with the mask of a demon instead to haunt her instead.
Her arrival to on the planet was not an eventful one and in truth it took little time for Sabé to find her location a small but cozy hut in the outskirts of Mos Eisley. The home suited her needs despite being simple and smaller then she’d like. Not to mention it served its was close to an old shop where parts for Vaporators could be purchased and for those in the know black-market parts as well. Which in reality spelt weapons and information to anyone who served the Alliance, for the owner of the shop was familiar with the movement and had been long since accepted under it’s wing. As appearances demanded she was a part time worker who helped the older man and woman run the shop. Her duties went with the guise that they were too old to handle the movement of the heavy parts and the constant demand of travel to purchase new supplies and upgrades which only aided in giving her room to move and leave should duty demand her presence elsewhere.
It wasn’t much of a life but it served it’s purpose and though she felt more like a shadow moving across the sands her promise of loyalty forces her to move onwards, to continue the battle in any way she can. Anything to ensure that the many lives lost at the hands of the Emperor and the monster that was once a Jedi are avenged. So that the sacrifices made by her comrades and fellow freedom fighters were not in vain.
Every day went pretty much the same for Obi-Wan, waking at the same time, attempting to meditate as the two suns rose over the dunes, checking on the Lars's farmstead, checking the moisture vaporators, various other daily acitivities, checking on the Lars's again in the evening, and then being haunted by the past as he fell into a fitful sleep at night.
Would things never get better? And Qui-Gon's spirit would repeat the same sorts of things about time and moving past...yet his guilt was keeping him back. It would be easier if he had something to throw himself into like a mission from the Council which no longer existed.
Once a week he would venture into Mos Eisley by foot to take what little moisture he had to sell so he would be able to buy food. He normally took the longest route as he did his best thinking when walking. Though it was a hot climate, he always hoped for the odd merchant with tea. It was an old habit that was hard to get past, drinking tea.
And the thought of tea brought on thoughts of his dear old friend who might be dead.
'I wish you good luck to you, my friend. May your journeys be safe and prosperous. And may fate permit our paths to cross once more...'
'Take care of yourself, Sabé.'
The path was rocky now as he made his way down the more crowded roads within the city limits. He kept his hood up against the glaring suns and out of public eye. There was still constantly the threat that he might be recognised. This is why he chose one of the lesser known outlets to sell his water. The elderly couple were always kind and he sensed no threat from them though at one time the older man spotted the lightsaber he carried.
When he arrived, the bells tinkered as he entered and set his bag on the counter, taking out the containers of moisture. 'Wasn't very prosperous this week,' he remarked casually.
The sound of the bells tinkering marked that there was a customer though inwardly Sabé hoped it would be one of their contacts stopping in with news of the front. Though she had only return here a couple of days ago from a recent weapons run to Datooine already she is eager to learn of the results. The only thing that seemed to matter to her now was knowing that justice was being served. That while the Empire may still stand proud for all to see, beneath it's great walls a storm was beginning to brew. That justice and freedom would not remain hidden or chained to this corrupted dictatorship. Yet even this at times wasn't enough and Sabé still struggled with the shame and sorrow that always seemed to linger in her thoughts.
Why couldn't you both have listened to me?
She thought sadly as she moved from the back of the store to the front. Sighing deeply she knew it was too late for such thoughts now and burying them once more she found herself being greeted by a cloaked man who had come to sell his wares of moisture.
"I'm sorry to hear that," sShe remarked with empathy knowing all too well the struggles that was part of life on this desert planet. Taking the container she moved to give the stranger monies owed when something causes her to pause.
There was something definately familar about this man. Painfully so and it caused her heart to stop as tears threaten to mist her eyes. No, it can't be possible she chastized herself It's all this sun it's making you delusional. Yet the feeling lingered nagging at her thoughts begging her to pick up on the clues.
Glancing back to him Sabé eyes studied the man's hooded form as she tried as careful she could to peer into the shadows that his face. Then it hit her full-force. The familar hum like a beacon piercing the darkness that is her thoughts. Her eyes widened as she blinked back tears.
It couldn't be. No, the gods wouldn't be so kind. No such blessings only existed in dreams now. Taking the chance and a very risky one at that she lowered her shields completely before him as quietly she permited a single thought to slip from her mind and hopefully gods willing through the walls of his.
...Master Jedi?...
With her heart in her throat she waited for a reaction, if any would come. Hoping and praying that it wasn't just her imagination that this was real. That she wasn't delusional. But if it wasn't real she would know for the non-sensitive would hear the whisper but never connect it to her. At least she hoped as much. But something told her it was safe to do this and so she chanced it.
Obi-Wan held out his hand as the woman approached with what little currency he would receive in return for the moisture. But the currency failed to reach his hand and he nearly risked lifting his hood when...
...Master Jedi?...
She touched his mind. No, it couldn't be. It wasn't possible. Not here. Not in this wasteland that was to be his exhile until Luke was older at a safer age to be trained, Force willing.
His normally glazed over expression slowly melted away as if the two suns themselves were pouring over him. Surely this was a mindtrick. She wouldn't...She couldn't... He figured he was starting to go mad and hallucinating her voice in his head.
As he finally gave in to his curiousity, raising his head and pushing back the impeding hood, his eyes and mouth widened slowly in amazement.
'S-Sabé?' he whispered, looking at her, unbelieving.
He didn't say a word and for a moment her heart sunk as Sabé inwardly sighed. She couldn't even be sure if the thought even reached this man or if it just floated effortlessly through nothingness. She wasn't trained in such things and in truth everytime she did try to do it Sabé knew it was a calculated risk.
But then the man before her lifted his head and drew back the heavy hood that covered his features revealing the image she had long since put to memory, buried deep in her conciousness, one of so many now that she tried to ignore for the pain was too great. Yet the man before her looked so much like Obi-Wan she found herself speachless and lost.
This couldn't be real she inwardly surmised, no it's definatly just a dream induced by the hot sun and lack of sleep. However she heard her name spoken softly and the reality comes crashing down with such weight that the former decoy stepped back slightly blinking as she stared at him with a look that seems to mirror his own.
"...Obi-Wan? It is really you?..."
The words barely escape her lips as her eyes turned cautious but hopeful. Please say it is so she inwardly prays hoping that fate would not play such a cruel joke as to fool her in this way.
He merely studied her for a moment. Taking in her features, she looked much older than the last time he saw her, mostly because she looked drained, tired. Her dress of simple burgundy, and her hair was tied up in a simple fashion, nothing like the glory days of the Republic.
But it was really her.
And then his name came from her lips. Her voice which had been imprinted in his memory, was finally heard aloud once again...
'Yes, it's me,' he whispered back, barely able to speak from overwhelming emotions which came crashing down all over him.
She felt his eyes studying her and Sabé can't help but feel concious of her appearance if this was indeed him, if this was indeed not a dream she would have wished she looked a little more presentable. But the past year had not been an easy one and she looked and felt like a mere shadow of her former self. Yet at his whispered reply, the hollow shell that was once Amidala's Principle Handmaiden, suddenly took a breath of air and with her gasp her once shattered heart suddenly sparked with life.
Sabé can't remember how she suddenly found herself embracing him in the tight hug she now held him in. For one moment she was behind the small counter barely registering the tears that without any warning had began to spill from her cheeks, the next she was suddenly here...But then again it didn't matter. He was real, he was alive and he was here in front of her.
"By the gods I thought you were dead, killed by..."
She would not ruin this moment by saying the Sith's cursed name and so her voice trails off before she sheepishly pulls away feeling suddenly conscious of herself for her rash and unxpected actions.
"...You have no idea how good it is to see you again"
She breathed feeling the life that had long since left her returning with a vengeance.
It was as though his his heart started beating again when the woman he thought he'd never see again emerged from behind the counter and fiercely clung to him.
'Sabé,' he said once he caught his breath and returning her fervent embrace. He felt the blood pumping through his veins again. He felt alive once more.
You have no idea how good it is to see you again.
She pulled away slightly and he saw the tears staining her cheeks. The sight of which caused his own eyes to fill with tears, but he blinked them back, raising a hand to her cheek. 'I think I have a fair idea,' he replied.
Throwing caution to the sand dunes, he kissed her with all the longing, gratitude, and withheld desire he possessed.
Just as much as he was giving all of himself to her, he was also filling his soul with her and it made everything else fall away. The store, the city, the sand, the suns, his depression and guilt, all of it was gone, at least temporarily as he fully let himself go.
There was only this; and he found that peace which had been so long out of his reach. She was his touchstone.
The elderly woman who co-owened the shop meandered to the front part of the store to find her employee kissing the young man who came in each week at the same time.
Her eyes grew wide at the sight and she turned around straightaway to go back where she came from. She could have sworn her husband referred to him as a Jedi and and was confused by this.
'Yes dear,' her husband replied. 'I saw his lasersword.'
'Well, he could have stolen it--' she insisted, saying the Jedi didn't ever cavort with members of the opposite sex. Although, she figured, it may very well have been a myth.
'No, no, you can't steal one from a Jedi.'
The woman placed her hands on her hips as she demanded, 'Then why is he out there kissing our shop girl?' Her husband moved to go have a peek, but she swot his arm. 'Don't even think about it!'
She could hear his voice whispered through their embrace and it causes
her heart to swell in joy. It was real, all of it. Not some blissful
dream to be scattered to the wind upon waking up. His arms wrapped
around her are like a blanket of peace that instantly heals the dark
scars that cover her heart and soul like a soothing balm. So that for
the first time since her entire life was shattered Sabé felt at ease.
Growing conscious of herself and her actions Sabé drew back slightly from their hoping she hadn’t startled or offended the Jedi Master before her. But instead she found herself staring into his eyes taking note they were filled with as much joy as her own.
At his simply reply she closed her eyes feeling his hand against her cheek as she leans into his touch feeling once more as though time has stood still. But nothing could compare to the heaven that was found in his unexpected kiss. It only took the briefest of moments for Sabé to recover from the overwhelmingly pleasant surprise.
She could feel the rush of his emotions radiating through his kiss filling her heart and soul with emotions she never thought she could ever feel again. It was as though she were but a dying flower wasting away in the desert and he, the spring rain that brought her to life once more.
Lost in his embrace, Sabé returns his rush of emotions eagerly, no longer caring where she is or whom may be witness to this. All that mattered in this moment was that he is here now, as she is sharing a moment that she had only dreamt of since that fateful day in the gardens in another lifetime ago.
Shivers ran through Obi-Wan from head to foot as she returned the kiss. Just to feel her in his arms again...to touch, to taste, completely giving in to everything he had held out on for so long...
And then there was a slight tingle in the back of his mind reminding him just where they were and that someone had walked in on them. Surprisingly, Obi-Wan didn't care.
He wasn't consciously aware of just how long they had been kissing, but when he pulled back, he drew her closer to hold her tightly to him again. 'I've missed you, Sabé,' he murmured, 'so much.'
Even eternity wouldn’t seem long enough for Sabé who melted in the Jedi Master’s embrace losing herself in her heart’s desire long since denied. For a moment there was no need to hide from her emotions, no duties to remain detached for or loyalties that demanded no attachments. Though the cause of this is painful enough Sabé finally found herself understanding the infamous saying that every cloud has a silver lining. For her it was the man before her who now gently drew away reminding her once more of her surroundings and the fact that at any given moment the shopkeeper and his wife may return.
Though she understood this she coulndn’t help but feel a little disappointment at the fact their kiss had drawn to a close so soon or so it felt. But within moments he pulled her back into his arms holding her near as Sabé once more basked in the peaceful sanctuary that was Obi-Wan’s embrace. Slipping her arms around him she held him tightly as he quietly spoke, causing her to cast him a gentle smile while her eyes says more then any words can.
“As have I, my dearest friend.”
She says softly as she gently touched his cheek her smile fading as her eyes now shine with sadness, joy and relief.
“I thought I had lost you. But you are here now and that is all that matters.”
It finally registered with Obi-Wan that she had assumed or was informed that he had been killed and the news reminds him of all the Jedi that had perished under the Supreme Chancellor--Emporer's--fatal order.
Thousands of questions swarmed in his mind. How did she get here? How long had she been here and how long would she be staying? But most importatnly, what sort of life had she known since the rise of the Empire? And would he be able to do anything to help?
But he quieted his mind, relishing the fact that she was here now, and he felt more at peace than he had in a very long time. 'I'm so thankful to see you unharmed. I've thought of you during my time here, but never knowing--'
His exhale was a bit shaky as he returned the gesture, touching her cheek while his other hand remained at her waist. He wanted to know everything, but was satisfied with just looking into her eyes. Like she said, none of that mattered.
But one question did matter.
'Will you be staying here long?' For he then supposed she might have a new mistress or another avenue of service aside from working here. When it came to Sabé, anything was possible and he didn't want to get his hopes up. He would respect whatever new occupation she was involved in, knowing she was one of the most honourable and intelligent women he had ever met.
Obi-Wan still had one duty left, and that would force him to stay on this arid planet for many years. He was also being hunted by the Sith and the Empire, not that it mattered much to him, except for the fact he needed to stick around for Anakin's children's sakes and the hope they bore.
Studying him closely as though once more putting his image to memory over again Sabé could almost see the questions that dance in his eyes and it only adds to her own eagerness. She wished she could leave and go somewhere anywhere with the Jedi before her to talk to learn all she can of their time apart.
She was grateful to see that he was safe and well. However it pained her to see the unspoken weight that even now shown in his eyes marking he has seen and been through more then any man should. Such is the price that comes with war, and even worse the betrayal of kin.
Silently she pushed down her thoughts not wishing them to go down paths less than pleasant when he is around. She had already spent the past year living in sorrow no need to prolong when joy is now within her grasp.
At his words she closed her eyes feeling his hand against her cheek as her smile widens slightly though she inwardly struggled to remain in control of her emotions once more. It was all so overwhelming though she wouldn't change it for the universe itself.
"It's alright...The past is behind us now..."
She said finally giving his arm a squeeze as her eyes turn gentle as she returned his gaze readily a soft sigh of contentment escaping her lips. She glanced to the small clock that hung in the back room barely in view from her angle as her smile brightens. The store would be closing shortly due to the intence heat leaving her a chance to slip away soon. At his question her attention was immediately back to Obi-Wan once more as she looks a little sheepish.
In truth a similar thought had passed her mind pertaining to him, but given his guise it could mean he is either here for a long time or posing as though he were.
"I suppose you could say that. I tend to travel alot mind you, but for now it would seem this is for all intents and purposes, my home. Or rather my place of work my home is a little ways from here. "
She said correcting herself as her cheeks warm before turning the question over to him.
"What about you? Are you here for a time or passing by under guise?"
At this the old shopkeeper's wife enters the room offering them both a smile as it is obvious to her that it's alright to briefly enter.
"You are free to leave dear, we're closing up now. Thank you again for all your help."
She said with a friendly smile to which Sabé bows politely in response. The older woman cast them both a slightly wistful look as though remembering her own youth before moving to head to the back once more.
"
You two be careful now, they say there's been some attacks recently in the outskirts by some thieves. You know how it is at this time of day,"
she said, reminding Sabé once more that most attacks occured at this time because it was not only the busiest hours of the day for travel, but most shop keepers would be taking their floats and monies home.
Returning her attentions to Obi-Wan once more she offered a shy smile as she asks, "I don't suppose you have time for tea do you? I got some while I visiting on Naboo awhile back..."
Her voice trailed off at the memory of the events before she shakes it aside as her smile returned agian.
"It's so hard to find any decent tea out here so I was sure to stock up! You definatly must have some...That is if you aren't already committed to something else?"
He was more than pleased to hear she had a place here, which meant she would be staying or had been staying on Tatooine for a while.
Obi-Wan was about to reply to her question when the elderly woman, who co-owned the shop, came to tell them they were closing up.
'Thank you,' he replied at her warnings of attacks. He briefly thought it was a shame he had to, for the most part, hide the fact that he was a Jedi. He couldn't go into stop fights with his lightsaber blazing. He now relied heavily on more subtle techniques like mindtricks or Force persuasion.
'Tea? Always,' he said, smiling. 'It's a rare time I'm able to purchase any here, given the--' he began at the same time she went on about how hard it was to get it and chuckled that they had spoken at the same time.
Still smiling, as he was just so thrilled to see her again alive and well, he shook his head. 'No, I haven't got any other commitments, a surprisingly lack of them, you might say.' But though this thought used to bring him pain, it was now a liberation, one which he would pursue with great enthusiasm.
She blushed deeply as she accidently intrupted him though was unable to resist a smile. How good it felt to be in his presence again she thought. All the hardships endured and the pain that would always linger no longer seemed so hard to bear. Just knowing he was alive, well and to her immense joy near brought her such peace that it made her giddy.
"Sorry...I tend to babble a little when..."
She shrugged shyly not bothering to finish her sentence sensing he wasn't bothered by her intruption. Another wave of joy fills her heart as she learned that he didn't have other commitments though it also encouraged her curiousity to know just why he was here of all places. But this was something she hoped to learn of soon enough.
"Excellent. Then I say we should definately take advantage of this oppertunity while we can."
She offered with a grin feeling her heart begin to race. Finally a chance for tea without intruptions, no one watching them as they talk or the threat of his former Padawan's accusing eyes. At least not for now anyways. She promptly buried the thought once more as she motions him to hold on for a moment.
"I have to grab my things and I'll be ready."
Quickly she rushes back unable to resist a wide grin to the elderly lady who laughs softly at her excitement.
"Had I known you both knew each other, I would have told you about him sooner. He has been coming here for some time now. However everytime he has arrived you were either away or working elsewhere."
Sabe smiled as she shakes her head too overjoyed to even care at this moment.
"It's alright. If fate wishes our pathes to cross sooner it would have come to pass. But even if it wasn't meant to happen sooner, it has happened and for that I am most grateful."
The older woman's eyes dance as she grips Sabé's arms in a friendly squeeze.
"It warms my heart to see you so happy Sefa. Now don't let me keep you any longer. Such moments of happiness is so rare these days that it would be a shame for you not to enjoy it as much as you can."
She says offering Sabé her sachel that contains her basic weapons and walking cloak a motherly smile still playing on her lips. Bowing again Sabé casts her friend and employer a kind smile before parting ways with her.
"Thank you once more. I will see you tomorrow then?"
The shopkeepers wife nodded and without another word they both part ways as Sabé returns with bag in hand and a wide smile on her lips.
"Alright I'm ready. Shall we then?"
She says motioning him to follow her as she leaves before glancing back to him with a wink.
"Now you must tell me about everything! I'm dying ot know what has brought you here and everything else that I've missed."
Completely forgetting the shopping he needed to do let alone the fact he hadn't received payment for what little moisture he had been able to acquire, Obi-Wan eagerly waited for Sabé's return from the back rooms. Her smile warmed his heart and part of him never wanted to let her out of his sight.
He followed her out of the shop and at her request for information, he thought that there was so much he wanted to talk to her about too, but it was not safe to do so in public.
However, there were new things that were no longer taboo.
Taking a chance, he reached for her hand as they walked through the marketplace.
'I've been living here almost a year now, near the south-western edge of the Dune Sea, Jundland Wastes area.' He didn't go into further details about just how he had found the abandoned dwelling or what brought him to this planet, but knew it would all come out eventually, once they were out of the public's eye. 'You said you live nearby?' It was more convenient and no doubt more accomodating than his hut.
In her haste she completely forgets the fact his monies still rests on the counter and is soon leaving with him out of the shop her eyes dancing in joy and excitement. Just the thought of returning from the back to find him still there almost seems too good to be real and as they step outside she pauses to look at him once more.
"I can't believe you're really here. That none of this is a dream."
She said almost giddy with joy as she is practically beaming. But before they have a chance to depart the familar voice of the shopkeeper's wife can be heard calling to them.
"Sefa? Good sir?"
Sabe turned around as the older lady rushes out to them with an apologetic look.
"Dear, I believe in yoru rush you forgot to take your money for the moisture. What sort of woman would I be if I didn't even pay my clients for their wares?"
She said offering Obi-Wan the monies before casting them both a kind smile as she promptly parts ways with them as Sabé blushes.
"Thats my fault entirely I totally forgot about it."
She said sheepishly before her eyes soften as his hand slipped into hers. Hands worn with callouses a sign of the many hours of training and handling of a lightsaber. Hands gentle but hard much like the man himself she thinks as another contented sigh escaped her lips as she gives it a squeeze enjoying how comfortable his hand feels in her own. Courage through peace she is reminded as she cast him another glance still trying to wrap her mind around the fact that this is indeed real.
At his questions she raises a brow casting him a surprised glance.
"That far? My goodness why?"
She hesitates suddenly feeling as though eyes and ears are everywhere.
"Nevermind fill me on that later."
At his question she nods slightly as she continues to lead him through the marketplace.
"Yes it's not too far from here just in the outskirts actually. I'm not exactly a fan of cities but this one isn't too bad it brings me close to where i need to be and it's easy access to supplies and such."
When Mrs. Darklighter rushed to catch up with them, placing the payment in his hands, he felt a pang of guilt for not having remembered it, seeing as how she had to chase them down it was getting ever hotter outside. He bowed, thanking her politely though she didn't appear to be affected by her mad dash to pay him.
He didn't release her hand as he normally automatically would out of fear that someone would make an inappropriate assumption. Such was the freedom and he saw the approval in the elder Darklighter's eyes.
But all that worrying about other people began to filter into the back of his mind with Sabé's reassuring squeeze of his hand. He couldn't help stealing a few glances at her. It was hard to get used to the fact they didn't need to hide anything anymore. There was no longer any dishonour in the mutual feelings they shared for each other.
But where was all of this leading? Obi-Wan was overwhelmed with everything that he couldn't think straight. It would be easier once they were away from everyone else. Everything seemed so much simpler when it was just the two of them.
'I have to admit it was a huge change moving here. I do miss the comforts of Coruscant though,' he said as they left the city limits, 'just as I miss the gardens of Naboo.' He recalled she had said she had been back there recently. He wondered how often she was able to go off planet.
Sabé notices immediately that his hand is still holding onto hers as Mrs. Darklighter approaches and it causes a rush of joy and panic to cross her mind. She knows there is no reason not to indulge in this simple gesture and yet after so many years of restraint it is almost instinctive to hide such emotions and yet it feels so wonderful not to have to anymore.
As they continued to walk Sabé could feel his eyes falling on her from time to time and it almost gives her goosebumps as the rush of joy felt is almost overwhelming. THis is real she reminds herself as she too sneaks a quick glance in his direction. We are in public, holding hands and no dishonor can be found in it. Our duties have been served, our loyalties never faltered and now maybe now we can enjoy a brief moment of peace. she thinks taking a deep breath to steady her racing heart and emotions.
How long have I secretly dreamed of this? How long has this haunted my dreams only for me to wake up feeling guilty that my heart would not be silenced despite my wishes to do so? She briefly glanced away taking another deep breath before smiling as she catches sight of her small home. Casting another glance to Obi-Wan she smiled warmly to his words before turning a little misty eyed as he speaks of the gardens Naboo.
"I can imagine...This place isn't nearly as...accomodating as Coruscant or as beautiful as Naboo."
She said growing wistful before studying him for a moment. But with you here like this suddenly this horrible desert planet doesn't seem nearly so bad after all she realizes with a contented sigh as she neared her home.
"I think the one thing I miss most about Naboo is the winter seasons. It's almost the right time of year to see the sky filled with snowflakes."
She remarksed her expression turning almost dreamy.
"Despite the chill it is such a lovely time of year."
Furrowing a brow she offered him a curious look.
"Have you ever been to Naboo during the winter season?"
Simultaneously, Obi-Wan felt that life on this arrid planet wasn't an exhile any longer, so long as she was here with him. She brought a joy to him that only increased in the amount of time they were able to spend together.
Her home was about the same size as his, though much nearer to the city and thus more convenient for her. He wondered if there were any places nearby for sale. He could sell more water, possibly, save up...but he dashed the thought, knowing he needed to remain close to the Lars homestead.
What would Sabé make of Padmé's child living here with his father's surname intact? He could only imagine. He would not, however, keep such information from her. He wondered if she'd had any contact with the Organas, but figured they hadn't told anyone outside of Master Yoda and himself... He wondered if Bail even told his wife whose child it was. But Obi-Wan knew he could trust Sabé with the information and when the time was right, he would.
He noted her dreamy expression and felt the nostalgia washing over him. 'I'm afraid I haven't,' he admitted. As much as he now wanted to, he knew that wasn't a possibility.
As they approach her small home Sabé found herself growing a little sheepish. I hope he doesn't find that it's too small or unaccomodating she inwardly fears but soon forces down the idea finding it almost laughable in reality. Given some of the hovels she was certain he had found himself in over the years due to missions and the war Sabé knew this couldn't possibly be any worse. Still instincts made her overly aware of this fact and soon she is a bit sheepish for it.
At his remarks her expression turns almost regretful as she sighed softly. How she wished there could be a way to show him the beauty of a snow filled Naboo. But after the incident at Padmé's former home she knew without question it was far too dangerous for such fanciful things.
All the same she wished there could be a way she could show him the joys that came with winter.
"I suppose its much like any other planet that has the winter season, but being from Naboo I tend to think that none come nearly as close to being as beautiful as my homeworld. Especially with the celebrations of Solstice."
She remarked with a smile her thoughts now on the famous celebrations as she activates the codes to permit access into her home.
"I think you would enjoy it. It's so colorful and beautiful the way the lights dance on the snow...Nevermind the live bands that play at the ponds edges while everyone skates and sleds on the hills nearby. Then of course there is the snowball fights, not that I ever got involved in those or anything"
She said with a wistful grin pausing only to enter the code to her small home before leading him inside not pausing once to release her hand from his.
Her eyes sparkled as she spoke of the traditional winter festivities and wished as much as she did that he could have been able to share it with her. But the fact she was sharing experiences with him enjoyable. It was true; just being able to hear her talk, to see her, to be there with her, was more than Obi-Wan could have dreamt for.
'What is skating and sledding?' he asked as she pulled him into the house. Having spent most of his life on Coruscant, he wasn’t familiar with such things.
He examined his surrounding, noting just how clean she kept everything. It was as if her life of service had made such a thing compulsory. He also needed little to survive, though he had quite a lot more belongings now than he ever had before, merely because it was essential.
As she led him into the house Sabé cast him a sheepish grin as if to say well here we are. But it soon turns to shock as he asks her just what skating and sledding is. Blinking she stared at him in surprise and disbelief.
"You mean to tell me in all of your travels across the galaxy you've never skated or gone tobogganing!?"
She laughed taking his other hand as she leads him eagerly to the living quarters of her small home.
"Obi-Wan! you haven't lived until you've learnt how to skate or sled! Thats what winter is all about!"
Though she is loathed to do so Sabé knew it was impossible to make tea while still holding the Jedi Master's hand and with an apologetic smile she lets go before moving into the kitchen that overlooks the living quarters.
"Well skating is like moving across glass. It's so relaxing, like floating on air, only in reality you're floating on two blades that are attached to your shoes and your moving on water.
Sledding on the other hand is like...well flying, you sit either on a thin piece of plastic or a wooden toboggan and you slide down hills of snow.."
She paused trying to think of how to describe a toboggan to someone whose never seen one. Grabbing a napkin she folded it in a desperate and failing attempt to show it's shape as she offers a sheepish grin to the lumpy creation that is supposed to be one.
"Okay this is a terrible example but you get the idea...Usually depending on the size the toboggan can hold up to three or four people with the person in the front holding onto a rope strapped to the front whiel the others hold onto each other.
It might sound silly to you but it's great fun!"
He listened to her glowing descriptions with great interest. 'Sliding down hills of snow and skating on frozen water. It all sounds a little dangerous to me.'
It was hard to imagine the concept, although her napkin creation helped visualise it a little bit. He didn't suppose she had any holos of such an event, so he didn't ask.
Obi-Wan took another glance around the place as she moved back into the kitchen. He wondered why he hadn't sensed her presence earlier since she had been her awhile, but Mrs. Darklighter had said she had been off duty. What other things had she been doing if she was only a part-time employee? He had so many questions, but was content in watching her move fluidly through the kitchen. It reminded him of the times she and her fellow handmaidens bustled about the senatorial quarters, preparing Padmé's belongings for whatever her busy schedule held.
Sabé grinned as she continued preparing their tea her eyes dancing at his words.
"Dangerous? Hardly it's alot of fun actually. Maybe a bit frustrating at first when one is still learning. But the snow is soft so it's not like you'd hurt yourself if you spend most of the time cleaning the ice as they say."
Suddenly a mental image of the Jedi Master attempting to skate fills her thoughts and she bursts out laughing.
"I think I would pay to see you learn how to skate Obi-Wan! I can only imagine how you would look!"
She teases before adding with an amused grin.
"Although I'd be more then happy to show you one day...When things are bit more..."
She shrugs as she sighs shaking her head. Now is not hte time to dwell on the dark she inwardly thinks before motioning to the makeshift toboggan.
"I wish I had some holo-vids but I left much of my things behind when I moved because of the rush and all.
But I'm sure during my travels I'll be able to find you something thats less junky looking"
She says her expression turning wry before she turns to grab a couple of cups, pours some tea before putting some dainties on a plate and returns to where he is seated. Offering him a cup the former handmaiden offers him a kind smile as her eyes dance with curiousity.
"Now it's your turn. You must tell me all about how you got here or why you are here unless of course it confidental. Although I am curious to know how long your stay will be or if this is jus t a temporary placement."
Inwardly she hopes it isn't temporary but knows if it should be she would accept it willingly understanding the demands of whatever duty he now serves. Though this thought too causes her to wonder if like herself he too served the fledgling Alliance. But if he wishes to speak of it she is certain he will do so.
At her teasing, he shook his head, grinning. He could only imagine what she was picturing in her head since he hadn't ever seen it before. It would be wonderful if someday they were able to go back to Naboo.
Obi-Wan took the cup and the smell was so familiar, the taste, divine. It had been ages since he tasted this type of tea, all the other kinds paled in comparison and it reminded him of all the times they had shared this tea together. A flood of memories washed over him.
Her query brought him back to the present. He noticed the various items of food she had set on the table near the couch as well and thought it would be all right to sit down.
'Tatooine is my home now. It's far out of reach from the Emporer and Ana--they won't search for me here.' He clutched the mug of tea a little tighter than before, hoping some serenity could be achieved through the nostalgia the tea brought on.
'I came here to bring Luke, Padmé's son, to his aunt and uncle. My hut isn't too far from their farm so I can look after him. That was my last assignment from Master Yoda.' He looked at her with a deep sadness and old sense of duty in his eyes.
"I'm sorry I just had such a mental image of you slipping about on skates that I couldn't resist!"
She says between giggles before sighing softly as she places the sweets on the coffee table near the couch before taking a seat next to him. Her eyes dancing in amusement as she can't help but enjoy watching him smile. How long had it been since she had last seen him smile? Even in dreams his visage seem to evade her and the peace she sought by the mere memory of him had long since faded away, till now.
At his remarks her heart instantly soars, but promptly sinks to her feet at the realization of the truth. But Tatooine is the monster's home! She thinks in fear. He is certain to come here at some point especially if learns of Obi-Wan's force signature. Her eyes fill with concern as she looks to him in obvious fear.
"How can you be so certain? Can you hide your signature? Oh gods what if mine leads them right to you?"
She thinks in horror thinking of how during her initial arrival here, in her sorrow and rage she often didn't keep her walls up as high as she should.
But then she is silenced at his announcement of Luke. Blinking she sits back in surprise.
"Luke? But I thought Padme only had a daughter...Leia. She had twins didn't she?"
She says softly as the realization hits her before going silent thinking once more of the wreath of roses left behind and the one who wove them in the first place.
"He doesn't know. Does he?"
She states her voice turning icy at the mere thought of the beast who was these children's father.
Obi-Wan took in her concern, but had a feeling even if his former apprentice knew he was here, he wouldn't confront him. He was too afraid. Obi-Wan had defeated him when he was at top form and he could do it again as the machine he had turned into.
'No, he doesn't know. We made sure of it,' he said. 'Padmé's children are safe.' He didn't question her about how she found out about Leia, but hoped that secret was safe as well.
Did that mean that she also new about Vader? Of course it did. He rubbed his forehead, not particularly wanting to go into detail about any of this. He wanted to forget about it, to move past--
The guilt rose up in him again and he couldn't help exclaming, 'I'm so sorry...for everything.' He would have said more, but he couldn't; the guilt stiffled him.
She sighs deeply in relief at his confirmation as she nods.
"That is a relief."
She says simply as she rubs her forehead before closing her eyes for a moment trying to ignore the rush of memories it invokes. The loss of lives, the destruction of all she had served, the helplessness of it all and the horror of learning that some things no matter how cherished and sacred they may be, can hold nightmares too.
His troubled remark pulls her back as Sabé stares at him in confusion. Though she is unable to read thoughts the guilt that pours off of the Jedi master leaves her speachless and more then a little concerned. Her eyes soften as she moves closer to him unable to resist as she slips an arm around his shoulders.
"Obi-Wan you have nothing to apologize for. You did nothing wrong."
She gently says understanding and all too familar with the guilt that plagues him. But she knows without question this isn't his fault. None of it was.
"You did everything you could, there was nothing more you could do."
She gently says wishing there could be a way she could comfort him or at the very least sooth his shattered nerves the way his mere presence could do the same for her.
He picked up his head to look at her, unsure if he could believe what she was saying, if he could let himself believe it as well. 'It was my arrogance, Sabé. I should have known--I should have been able to-- I was too young to begin training him and I didn't believe you when you said he--'
All of this and more came spilling out of him at a rapid pace. He hadn't ever told anyone about this, not even Qui-Gon's spirit since the Force Ghost already knew of the events that had transpired.
Obi-Wan thought of children at the temple, the slaughter, Padmé, Anakin's soul, everything... 'And now all that he's doing is my fault because I couldn't kill him. I couldn't kill my--brother.'
That was all it took for him to completely break down as he hadn't since his confrontation with the man who had once been his pupil. 'I am so sorry,' he repeated, giving in and resting his head on her shoulder in a futile attempt to hide his tears.
Sabé shakes her head slightly at him in disbelief at his words. Arrogance? You are many things Obi-Wan but arrogant? Never. She inwardly thinks in shock and pain as she can feel his guilt pouring off him in waves. Though touched and more then a little moved that he would find security enough in her presence to speak his thoughts so openly his words causes her own eyes to fill with sorrow.
Look at what that creature has done to you she thinks saddly. You have nothing to be shamed about. It is that monster who deserves this pain, not you. Even after all that beast has done, you still keep watch over his child ensuring that the boy grows up safely. You care for him more then Vader ever would, thus completing an honor that this monster doesn't even remotely deserve.
Shaking her head at his words she reaches out with her free hand and touches his cheek wanting to draw his attention to her as she gently replies.
"Obi-Wan you are not arrogant. You are the most selfless, noble man I've ever known. None of this is your fault. You did everything you could to save him from himself. He choose to travel the path of the corrupted and the chaotic of his own free will not because of anything you did. Believe me Obi-Wan you have nothing to apologize for. Only he does."
Going silent she slips her other hand from his cheek around his shoulders as she holds him close trying as futile as it may be to comfort him with her presence. Anything to let him know that despite all that has passed she is here now. That no matter what happens she will always remain by his side as his silent support and confident.
Could he believe it? Her adamant words and soothing embrace stirred something in him. He was not ashamed that he had let his guard down, nor that he was showing emotions he normally kept buried within.
Her compassion was overwhelming and yet, there was truth to her words. She had been right before and he hadn't listened to her. It would be wrong of him not to listen to her now. What further pain would he cause himself if he didn't? Would this guilt slowly eat away at his own soul until he was no more a person than--? No, he wouldn't let that happen.
Still locked in her embrace and holding onto her as well, he raised his head to meet her eyes, comforting, patient, benevolent. He couldn't help feeling unworthy. 'I don't deserve you,' he murmured.
Gently she holds him while closing her eyes briefly to hide her own sorrow at the Jedi Masters undeserved guilt. It hurts to see him like this and it leaves her helpless knowing that he doesn't deserve to feel this way but also painfully aware that he doesn't understand this. So she continues to try and comfort him in anyway she can as she moves her hand to his head stroking his hair as her mother used to do it years ago when she was a child troubled by nightmares.
"I know it isn't easy to accept, but truly you have nothing to be ashamed or guilty about."
She says quietly as he lifts his head to return her gaze; his deep blue orbs are so filled with shame that is leaves her speachless once more. Yet it is the soft murmur of his words that finally shatters her heart and destroys what is left of her self contained sorrow. The normally well hidden tears slip down her cheeks as she shakes her head unable to hide the fact his words cut deeply leaving her torn in disbelief to what she is witnessing.
"Obi-Wan please don't say such things. You don't mean that. Please say you don't mean it."
She barely whispers. If anything I am not worthy of you she inwardly mourns. You, with such a pure heart that can see the single strand of light when there is only darkness. How can you say such a thing when I have been nothing but vengeful and hateful to the one that even now you still love as a brother.
'Sabé,' he whispered in response. Her tears tore at him, for he had not once witnessed crying, not like this. It was now his turn to comfort her and he mimicked the gesture she had done only moments before, touching her cheek.
He didn't know what had caused that dam to break and almost regretted it now for having caused her pain. 'I'm sorry,' he said again, only this time referring to what he said and not about previous things he had no control over.
Meeting her eyes, his wounded soul was crying out to her how much he loved her, how he was so grateful she was here with him, that perhaps Qui-Gon was right and these wounds would heal, that she gave him the hope he so desperately needed. He was selfishly basking in her empathy when she had been wounded as well.
'Tell me everything, Sabé, everything that happened since the last time I saw you.'
She closes her eyes hearing him whisper her name as Sabé feels shame burning at her cheeks. She shouldn't be breaking down like this and the realization that Obi-Wan is certain to take it to heart causes her to feel even more guilty. I should be comforting you not the other way around she thinks miserably. After all you were the one who has been through the trials of fire not me. It is your 'brother' who turned on you and the rest of your family, not mine.
Still his touch is a comfort and his apology helps sooth her shattered heart though she wishes she could do the same for him. Quietly she returns his gaze finding in it all the things she wanted to say but never could. Her own gaze seems to reflect his thoughts though already it carries the beginning hints of healing as though his mere presence once more served as the healing balm for her soul.
She offers a weak smile to his final remarks before closing her eyes as she breathes a shakey sigh.
"I will...But only if you tell me everything that has happened to you."
She gently whispers drawing him close to her, wishing she could just lose herself in the solace of his embrace, but wishing even more so that he could lose himself in hers. He needed peace so desperately and Sabé found herself once more wishing that there could be some way she could give it to him. It was the very least he deserved.
Holding her close, he felt hope returning to him that their fate was not so bleak. Despite everything that had happened, it caused them to be here together now. The Force willed it so.
Obi-Wan slowly let the story unfold starting from leaving her to seek out General Grievous and not failing to let her know how torn he was about saying goodbye to his oldest, dearest friend. After delivering Luke to the Larses, there wasn't much left to tell, but it felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
He did not have to bear the burden alone. And now there was the hope that he would not be alone in anything anymore.
Closing her eyes Sabé quietly embraces all that is his presence. Gently resting her head against his shoulder, Sabé breathes in the scent of spice and fresh air that has always been associated with the Jedi Master as she listens to his words in keen interest. Though he speaks of the troubles he has experienced which even now concerns her deeply Sabé finds herself feeling that despite the hardships, there is still hope yet. Perhaps in this dark nightmare some light can be found she inwardly ponders, enjoying his close proximity and the peaceful aura it exudes.
As he concludes his thoughts she too begins to explain her side of the story from when he parted ways with her, to when Padme urgently asked her to attend a rather classified meeting that would lead to her entering the services of the Fledgling Alliance, to the very rare moment of truce between Anakin and herself, the death of her handmaidens who tried to resist till the end at the hands of the Imperial troops and finally with much hesitance the wreath of roses left behind, what it represented and how from this she learnt of Darth Vader's true identity.
Upon explaining her side of the tales Sabé falls silent her expression that of tired peace as though she had seen much, too much perhaps in her years, but having finally found peace from the demons and nightmares of the past.
Suddenly the future didn't seem so bleak anymore and with a contented sigh she finds herself feeling almost like her old self again. But with him near anything seemed possible and the thought brings her a rush of joy and contentment she had not known since her world had fallen apart during those fateful days of the past.
AS she spoke, he stroked her hair, which had been previously wound tightly in a single braid down her back and had since come a little loose. Hearing of the new alliance against the Empire, he wouldn't have thought any less of her given her loyalty to her former mistress. She was still striving to keep the dream of peace alive, despite the obstacles.
He was surprised to hear that he had left the wreath of roses. After all the destruction and mayhem, how he had lost his way... Would he even think of his own children? At least he presumed them dead along with his wife. Perhaps there was hope he could be redeemed... But Obi-Wan didn't want to think about that right now. It was already so difficult to bear.
'How often do your missions take you away from here?' he asked, wondering what sort of leadership this fledgling group had and who gave out the orders.
His gentle touch only adds to her soothed mindset and soon Sabé finds herself absentmindedly stroking his shoulder as she talks. Though at his surprise to her revelation and the roses she briefly goes silent, knowing the delicacy of this situation though inwardly she can't blame him. At least he is taking it better then she had. Still even now she didn't know what to make of it and in truth she hopes she never does.
At his question she grows thoughtful as she furrows her brow.
"It depends really. At this moment they are still establishing units and headquarters for contacts to traverse and communicate. They are still developing you see which is where I come in, as most admitly are members of the old Senate with Senator Organa and Mon Mothma spearheading. From what I gathered Senator Amidala was to have been in a simular position although all things considering..."
Her voice trails off. It's probably best she isn't she inwardly surmises. Her close relations to Vader would have made for a certain death of the alliance.
"So basically my duties include establishing an outpost on Tatooine, while ensuring proper training is set up for the new recruits on Dantooine and Alderaan. That and of course I run information amongst other things for those in charge. Although I have volenteered to join the front lines so to speak should they need me."
Inwardly she wishes there could be some way for Obi-Wan to join but knows it would be an impossibility. But the thought of fighting side by side with the Jedi Master does carry a certain appeal to it especially when the thought is pondered while resting comfortably in his arms.
"So outside of watching over Luke how do you spend your days? Have you fully established a false identity?"
'Bail Organa,' he gasped. But then when he thought about it, it made sense. He considered what that would entail, the danger it would also put Leia in. Obi-Wan trusted the senator though and knew he would be wise in the decicions he made.
The description of Sabé's new duties sounded dangerous, but admired the fact she was so passionate about it. He continued brushing his hand over her hair, relishing the feel of the soft texture. Her words about volunteering for the frontlines was alarming since she had primarily remained in the covert aspect of espionage. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that. She was certainly more valuable to the Alliance behind the lines.
'My days are certainly more laid back than they ever have been,' he admitted with a slight smile. In truth, he had been so consumed with guilt that he had merely gone through his days with the same routine, not thinking about the details.
'What do you mean false identity?' This was something that hadn't occured to him.
She nods slightly picking up on his surprise as she offers a dark smile.
"Sometimes it is safer in the eye of the storm. After all your compatriots did choose Tatooine of all places to raise Luke. But I have watched the Senator throughout the years and he has proven himself to be compitent and calm under pressure. I have no doubt Leia will be safe under his and Queen Breya's care. Just as I have no doubt Luke too has excellent watching eyes."
She adds as her smile turns kind. Then for a moment she goes silent just enjoying his touch and his soothing presence as she continues to gently let her fingers twirl on his shoulder as she glances up to him with a contented smile as he comments about his time now being more laid back.
"Thats good to hear, it would seem my schedule isn't as it used to be and i'd hate to think my fencing partner is too busy to be bothered with training with me from time to time."
But at his final question she raises a brow slightly thinkng he's joking.
"A fake name, fake I.D. you know things to help you slip through the cracks so the empire doesn't learn of you of course."
He smiled softly at her words, looking down at her, pleased to see a smile on her face as well. He was also pleased to hear that she would not be tied to a strict schedule nor one that would change as much.
'I know what it is, but why--' he began, but she explained herself. 'I didn't think of using one.' He quirked an eyebow at her. It wasn't something Jedi often did, use a fake identity, it was against what they stood for. Although there were rare occassions where some would pose as Dark Jedi to spy on Dooku...and he had asked Anakin to spy-- Such a deception...false identities...
She blushes upon realizing she had cut him off and promptly goes silent her expression apologetic. You'd think after all these years Id learn not to do that she inwardly chides herself, till his question causes her to sit up in shock and obvious concern.
"You can't be serious? You mean to say all this time you've been carrying your own name? Obi-Wan do you have any idea how dangerous that is? You know what hunts you and yet you have no regard to your own security!?
By the gods...If I was working in the Imperial army as intelligence it would not be hard for me at all to locate you. Especially given that your name precedes you on so many planets all over the empire."
She sighs deeply her expression now taut with fear and concern.
"You must learn to cover your tracks better then that. If not for your own safety then for the safety of Padme's son. It's too dangerous not to."
Her exclamation shocked him. Though it partially reminded him of the time he was merely a padawan and she, the queen, chiding him for having lost his lightsaber.
'I haven't spoken to many people, nor have I told them my name,' he said. 'I've done my best to stay on the outskirts. The only people who know who I am and why I'm here are the Larses and...well, you.' His hand mvoed from her hair to her back, rubbing in a light circular manner.
She sighs deeply in relief at his words and calms down slightly though it is obvious she is still uncomfortable with his lack of disguise. Furrowing her brow she bites her lip before casting him a determined look.
"At some point or another you're going to have to reveal some piece of identity Obi-Wan. What if you stumble on someone who is more sensitive to the Force and your tricks don't work on them."
She sighs deeply concern still evident in her eyes though she begins to relax to his gentle touch as she leans back in resting her head on his shoulder as she remarks in quiet but determined tones.
"I know you think I'm being overly paranoid but after spending as much time working in intelligence as I have and still do one learns the tricks of the trade. I just don't want them to track you here."
She admits quietly inwardly adding, I only have just found you, please understand i'm not about to part with you so easily...
"You really do need an alias. Something to dissuade any wandering eyes or wagging tongues."
When she relaxed again, he assured her, 'I don't think you're paranoid. I do appreciate you looking out for me though.'
She knew her stuff. When it came to intel, she was the one to go to. If she thought he needed an alias, then he would respect that, despite the hints of ignobility. 'An alias,' he said a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. 'You make it sound so intriguing.
'Hmm...' He thought aloud. 'I haven't a clue what name I would choose.'
She offers him a sheepish smile at his words feeling a little concious of herself once more as she remembers Sache teasing her for having eyes in the back of her head and ears all over the walls.
"It's good to know someone understands..."
She says blushing as she glances to her hands.
"I know i tend to be protective of those...close to me...I just don't mean to be overbearing I just worry sometimes."
More like all the time now she inwardly chides herself before his remarks causes her to smile as she casts him a grin.
"Well that is what it's called. I don't know if its intriguing but it does help keep trouble away."
She furrows a brow trying to think of a few names herself before casting him another glance.
"Do you have a middle name at all? We could use that if you like."
He was so thankful her glances no longer had to be so secretive. He was thankful he could look at her and not be ashamed of doing so.
'Middle name? No, just Obi-Wan,' he said, with a slight shrug. He brainstormed a few names and asked her what she thought of them. This was definitely hard.
She raises a brow slightly in surprise before turning pensive once more.
"No middle name? Well that's not much use to us."
She says with a grin still trying to get used to the idea that it is alright to be here by his side without fear of dishonor or disloyalty. As he offers some suggestions she finds herself shakin gher head. They were too obvious, too Coroscanti for her liking as she tries to encourage him to try other names while unconciously nuzzling against his shoulder as she realizes there is truly is no place more comfortable than in his arms.
'Hmm...' he thought aloud once more, consciously aware of how comfortable it was sitting here with Sabé in his arms. It felt so...natural...as if they had been doing this all of their lives.
And perhaps on some level they had, only in spirit.
His fingers played with the clasp holding the end of her hair in the braid as he thought about more names. 'This is harder than riding a boga,' he said after she rejected another round of names. Simpler names... 'I don't know...Ben?'
She listened to him in silence enjoying teh sound of his voice and how gentle and yet regal it sounded all the while basking the peaceful presence that is his arms. His names still sounded too regal too noble for one who has spent a life in the desert and she can't help but giggle as he compares this little task to riding the oversized lizard like creature. But then he make a final suggestion and it clicks nodding slightly she nods a smile growing on her features.
"Ben Kenobi. I like it. Simple and carries an air of mystery. It suits you."
She says finally satisfied at his choice before giggling at his earlier complaint.
"Riding a Boga can't really be that hard can it?"
'Really? Ben Kenobi...'
Thinking about it, he rested his head against hers for a moment, but then she giggled.
'Hey, you'd be surprised!' he chuckled. 'I'd like to see you try it sometime. They're about as hard to control as those eopies. OK, much worse. I'm not exagerrating. If I wasn't able to use a mind trick, I don't know how I would have managed.'
She smiles pleased to see he liked the name as well before her smile widens as she feels his head resting on hers causing another smile to form which soon turns to a giggle at his exclamation.
She beams as he tries to explain how to ride a Boga before laughing softly as compares them to an Eopie.
"I've never ridden either so I can't say which is worse to be honest. You must show me one day!"
She says giggling softly as his beard tickles her cheek lightening her spirits that much more.
'All right,' he agreed, loving the feel of the vibrations her laughter caused. He had never felt so close to another person in his life. In truth, he hadn't ever experienced this before. He prayed this wouldn't be the last time, but even if that was what the Force had in store for them, he wouldn't forget it.
Smiling at his words she nods before once more getting herself comfortable as she sighs contented.
"Im going to hold you to that Obi-Wan."
She murmurs in sleepy tones her eyes growing heavy as Sabé feels as though she is wrapped in a blanket of warmth. The soft sound of his heartbeat sooths her further and soon she drifts into a comfortable sleep, her thoughts now filled with peaceful joy as her heart feels as close to heaven as one mortal can hope to be.
Her last statement was a bit muffled in his tunic, but he made out I'm going to hold you, Obi-Wan and he wasn't going to object.
When her breathing slowed to a regular pace, he knew she was asleep. He finally figured out how to free her hair from the braid and loosened it with his fingers, allowing it to slip through his hand with carefree ease. He didn't risk shifted even the slightest bit on the couch, so that he wouldn't risk waking her. He felt bad for having kept her up so late. He knew she had to work that morning.
He looked down at her, sleeping so contently, holding him... It choked him up. She was here. She was safe. He meant what he said before: he didn't deserve this. He didn't deserve her. Tears welled in his eyes as he watched her sleep.
But their souls were connected, he knew it. On some level he had always known that and they didn't need to vocalise it.
He kissed the top of her head and held her until morning.
Her dreams are filled with peace and contentment. She was safe, she was at peace and most of all she felt as though she was basking in all the emotions she had come to reconize and cherish throughout the years for him. But it was different somehow for in previous dreams the emotions were there but they were subtle and almost intangible.
Now it was all around her, surrounding her in every way imaginable filling her soul like a dried damaged vessel absorbs and is filled with water. Yet all the while she could feel another recieving these emotions from her as well and this too brings much comfort and peace. Briefly awakening from her peaceful rest in the wee hours of morning Sabé finds herself still in Obi-Wan's comforting embrace. Though she knew he might consider this inappropriate, another part of her seemed to whisper that this is meant to be. And it is with this thought that she once more closes her eyes in utter contentment and drifts back to the peaceful sleep that is found in the heaven that is the Jedi Master's arms.
It was not very long before sunrise and Obi-Wan had stayed up the entire night, keeping a vigil as if he was afraid to fall asleep, fearing he would wake to find her gone. But they had made it through the crucible, for Sabé was still here in his arms, and now as the suns rose in the sky, he felt incredibly peaceful albeit exhausted.
He didn't know what time she had to be up to work and was reluctant to wake her. Disentangling himself from her, he tossed his cloak over her where she lay on the couch and set about attempting to fix something for breakfast. It took awhile to figure out where she kept utensils, but he eventually found what he needed.
She shifts slightly as he moves to untangle himself from her embrace but soon is softly sleeping once more as the familar scent from his cloak calms her stirring. However this is shortly lived as her eyes blink open blearly as though her subconcious is suddenly aware of the unintended ruse. Glancing around she looks a little confused as though curious as to why she is on the couch and not in her bed but the memory comes back to her with a rush as her face falls to the sight of Obi-Wan's cloak.
He must have left she inwardly sighs. Not that I can blame him, how terrible that must look me drifting off like that she fears. Now he thinks I must find him not worth my attention or worse boring! I can't believe I let myself do that!! This causes an audible sigh to escape her as Sabé frowns disappointed before turning confused as she realizes her hair is no longer in the braid that it was in earlier but before she can make sense of it the scent of food catches her attention as instantly she is on feet.
Oh gods! I told Mrs. Darklighter I'd be in today!!
She thinks in horror before grabbing the cloak from her lap and rises to her feet. Moving quickly as she doesn't register that the scent of food is from her kitchen and not from the town nearby. Rushing into her room she quickly grabs a clean set of garb and rushes to the fresher still unaware in her blind panic that she isn't alone.
But as she emerges a short time later in a different but still simple dress her hair knotted in a elaborate bun she rushes into the kitchen to grab something to drink and almost ploughs into Obi-Wan in the process.
"Obi-Wan!"
She says in shock stepping back in surprise suddenly realizing in that moment the powerful hum she felt in her mind through the chaos of her preparation wasn't just wishful thinking after all. A sheepish grin plays on her features as her hand slips to the ribbon of the blade that even now rests on her hip.
"I'm so relieved you are still here! I feel so bad for falling asleep like that on you...I thought you would be offended, thinking I was tired of you- which I'm not!"
She quickly says in a rush feeling bad for drifting off and hoping it hasn't completely ruined his impression of her. Yet as she speaks she notices his own exhaustion and promptly realizes that while she had slept he must have been awake. Another rush of shame fills her as she glances to her hands.
"You didn't get any sleep did you."
She states rather then asks her expression filled with shame.
"I'm sorry this is all my fault. I shouldn't have kept you up all night as I did and then turn around and drift off like some thankless boor."
It is only then she registers that he is fixing himself something to eat and it gives her a rush of relief knowing he is comfortable enough around her to do so. Though this too also makes her cheeks warm in embaressment. I should be the one making food she thinks sheepishly After all I'm the hostess and here I am about to take off to work...If he has any respect for me after all this diabolical I will be most surprised.
Just as he fished two plates out of the cupboard, he heard Sabé stirring on the couch. When she panicked and raced into the other room, he thought perhaps he ought to have waken her earlier. He hoped she wasn't late.
He set the plates with food and two cups of tea on the table when she nearly ran into him. 'Good morning,' he said, as she frantically explained herself. His eyes danced with amusement, but was thoroughly pleased she wasn't angry with him for having used her kitchen without permission.
Her apology wasn't necessary. If anything, he ought to be the one apologising. 'No, I shouldn't have kept you up so late since I knew you had to work today...' He gestured to the table he had set. 'I hope you don't mind that I fixed breakfast. I don't know how much time you have...'
He looked at her, concerned that she thought he shouldn't have stayed over. ...you're still here His cheeks flushed. Oh dear... he thought, imaging what it might seem like.
And he hadn't freshened up like she had. And he looked like hadn't any sleep. He couldn't imagine what she was thinking of him at this point. It was the best night of my life. Just staying with her, holding her, watching her sleep. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
With cheeks now quite rosy Sabé bows to his greeting as she bites her lip.
"...Morning..."
She says shyly before trying to frantically explain her actions and apologize for them. At his own apology she shakes her head slightly offering him a sheepish grin.
"I would have stayed up late anyways, besides I was able to share it with good and much missed company. Although I am truly sorry for dozing off as I did.
Its no wonder you got no rest, I can't imagine sitting on a couch with me as deadweight on your shoulder would hardly be what one would call comfortable."
She adds biting her lip before adding with an apologetic smile.
"Please feel free to wash up and get some rest here. I’ll be at the shop so if you need anything, you know where to find me…”
At his offer for breakfast her eyes drift to the table. She knows she should probably be on her way very soon, but to leave now would only compile her poor behavior that much further she tries to tell herself all the while knowing in truth a moment like this comes but once a lifetime and she just can’t pass up on it.
“Who am I to resist such an offer?”
She says with a shy smile touched at the fact he had gone to the trouble and on no sleep no less to make her something to eat before she went to the shop. But remembering her duties she motions slightly to the comm link in the next room as she remarks.
“I’m just going to let her know I’ll be there a bit late, so we don’t have to rush or anything. I know she’ll understand.”
With that she quickly departs to explain her tardiness to the shop keeper and his wife of which as she had predicted weren’t bother by at all. Upon completion she returns quietly and takes a seat as the scent of fresh food has now since awoken her appetite.
'I wouldn't want to intrude on your hospitality,' he said after her offer of letting him stay here to freshen up and have a rest for a few hours. The invitation was, however, rather inviting.
Obi-Wan was a bit taken aback at how Sabé had shrugged off the previous evening as if it hadn't been anything special, but knew she was quite busy and had to get to work. He was further surprised that she commed the Darklighters to ask if she could be a bit late. He hoped they wouldn't think ill of her for it, or himself for that matter having made her late...
He didn't think about how it might look to other people that he had stayed over because that thought didn't enter his head or else he would have been extremely embarrassed.
He waited for her to return before starting to eat. After a few minutes, he said in a soft voice without looking at her. 'You weren't dead weight.'
She shakes her head at his words as she gives him a shy but kind smile.
"Of course you wouldn't be Obi-Wan if anything I'd be offended if you didn't. You are always welcome here.
She slips away to speak to the shopkeepers and inwardly begins to feel her nerve slipping away. What has gotten into me? She fears I'm acting as terrible as An - no. Never that bad but close. Her cheeks flush with shame as she knows if she does stay for breakfast she would certainly be late, yet at the same time she can't deny this rare oppertunity either. She knows they will understand especially given her real line of work but it still troubles her all the same.
She returns quietly and seems oddly pensive as she begins to eat. Her thoughts are on the night before the heaven of his arms and the awkward silence that now lingers between them. I have offended him haven't I? She inwardly fears wondering now if she was too forward to invite him to stay while she went to work.
His words suddenly breaks through the silence and it causes her to look up quietly her eyes wavering as she studies him for amoment. Part of her is so relieved she feels almost lightheaded the other wishes there could be someway to convey to him that last night was without question one of the happiest moments of her life.
"...I just feel bad for...I didn't mean to offend you...It's just..."
She sighs feeling her cheeks lighting up once more as she decides to chance it and express her thoughts despite knowing he may think less of her for it.
"...It's just last night...Well it was like a dream come true...I don't think I've ever been so happy..."
She says softly unable to look at him now.
When she replied, he felt and heard the slight waver in her voice as she explanined that she hadn't wanted to offend him, as if she still felt like she was offended him for some reason.
She was the last person in the galaxy that could offend him. There was only just the once that she had, but now he knew he had in truth wronged her for not believing her about Anakin.
And then she admitted how she felt about the night before and his heart swelled with ineffable gratitude. 'Good,' he said simply.
Obi-Wan didn't wear his heart on his sleeve. He rarely showed emotion, especially in the last years of the Clone Wars and this often made it hard to relate to people. There were feelings for Sabé that he couldn't name, but he knew if he didn't tell her something, she wouldn't know.
There is no ignorance; there is knowledge.
He took a drink in attempt to soothe his suddenly parched throat as he looked at her.
But protestations of love? Certainly she knew. She had to have known for years... Could he?
'Sabé...'
It took all of her courage to admit her thoughts outloud and now feeling vulnerable for them she falls silent. Though the Jedi in many ways were different from Handmaidens there were enough simularities to breed understanding or so she had hoped. Normally she wasn't one to expose her heart so openly feeling to do so would be a sign of weakness. That such things weren't necessary as vulnerability was too dangerous to be toyed with. Yet the words come and inwardly she is almost relieved to have been able to openly express her thoughts.
But this comes to a crashing reality as his simple reply leaves her both confused and torn. Good? What could that possibly mean? Did she cross another line? Was she being too forward, did she scare him off with the openness of her remarks?
Going silent she tries to steady her thoughts wishing somehow she could go back and take the words that spilled from her lips and hide them away. Staring at her food she suddenly finds her appatite isn't what it once was and she sighs softly her fingers once more slipping to the ribbon on her blade as she twists it pensivally till she hears her name spoken causing her to look up cautiously.
'I--er,' he began, lamenting the fact that though he had just taken a sip of tea, his throat was once again dry as a bone.
Obi-Wan swallowed hard. Her confusion only added to his own inability to spit out a proper sentence.
Courage, strength...you've defeated how many Sith Lords and you can't talk to a woman?
But they never trained us for this type of situation. What have I gotten myself into? I just need to tell her--
'I--' he began again, but took the easy way out, 'was wondering if you're free after work?' He bowed his head, finding the food on his plate quite interesting.
He hesitates but she can't seem to stop herself from watching him closely as she furrows a brow wondering what is on his mind.
He seemed as nervous and awkward as she felt and Sabé finds herself once more wishing she hadn't spoken her thoughts as she had. But at his question she blinks in surprise, as waves of relief pours over her. Despite his cool reply this question seemed to reveal he wasn't as offended by her exposure of emotions as she thought.
"I would like that, very much so."
She says quietly offering a shy smile in reply.
