Phantom Menace: Hyperdrive Repair
Queen's Starship,
Once Qui-Gon arrived with the hyperdrive generator, Obi-Wan assured him it wouldn't take long to install and headed back onto the ship. However, what he expected to be an easy task turned out to take quite a bit more time than expected.
This specific genarator was first of all not new and second of all not in basic. It didn't help that he wasn't familiar with Nabooan writing.
How in the blazes is this part supposed to fit in this other when none of this seems to be in allignment?
He had told Qui-Gon it wouldn't take long! He would be back soon, no doubt, along with that boy. Frustrated after having tried for the ninth time for one of the pieces to fit correctly, he threw the tool he'd been wielding, frustrated.
He knew that wouldn't help matters, but he was just so frustrated. He wanted to kick something, but remembered the last time when he thought he had lost his lightsaber that kicking would definitely not help the situation. He sat down and bent over to pick of the tool, twirling it around in his fingers as he began clearing his thoughts.
Sabe didn't mean to be impatient in truth she was immensely grateful to
both of the Jedi for assisting them in their repairs and in truth for
all of their help. But she was anxious to depart for Naboo to bring
this conflict to a head and end it swiftly. Which meant trying to bury
down the immense frustration that came with the discovery that Master
Jinn had departed to retrieve the boy Obi-Wan had spoken of from Mos
Eisley and would be returning shortly.
She tried to keep a professional take on matters but in reality it only made her that much more antsy. But the Queen was adament that the boy join them in their travels and had thoroughly rebuked her for suggesting they come back later to retrieve the child.
So with a polite nod she let the matter drop telling herself that the Queen was right in her decision. After all when would they have a chance to return to this world again? Though she understood the motives behind PAdme's actions, Sabe couldn't seem to bury the itchy feeling that seemed to linger in her thoughts. It wasn't like she'd would ever see the boy again once they arrived to Naboo, so why was she so apprehensive?
Burying the thought as best she could Sabe found herself mindlessly wandering around the ship before finding herself absently entering the Engine room just in time to hear the sound of something clattering against the floor. It promptly snapped her out of her thoughts and alerted her in that moment to the familiar hum she had come to reconize as none other then Jedi Kenobi.
Approaching quickly she furrowed her brow concerned something might be wrong but soon found herself instead in the presence of a rather frustrated though trying to calm himself Obi-Wan. Her expression instantly turned sheepish and then curious as she watched him picking up the tool and quietly twirling it between his fingers.
Having put two and two together Sabe offered a slightly amused smile as she remarked.
"And here I thought you were all trained to maintain calm under even the most trying of circumstances. Was I being misled in that assumption Jedi Kenobi?"
She lightly teased unable to resist.
Caught up in his frustrations, Obi-Wan hadn't noticed Sabé's entrance. Her lilting, teasing tone embarrassed him, because he should have his frustations under more control. He shouldn't let things get to him. As much as he wanted to impress her, he also didn't want to disappoint his master and currently, he was failing in both respects.
'The blasted thing's not in Basic and I can't make out the Nabooan markings...' he admitted shyly. He found it hard to look at her out of humiliation.
He turned his thoughts to her and the queen who had just returned. 'How is the queen?' he asked, referring to her as well, but careful to keep it vague enough that he was being polite, not intrusive.
Sabe blushed slightly feeling a little guilty for her teasing as she noticed he was avoiding her gaze as she found herself picking up on his humilation. Though upon hearing his shy admittance she couldn't help but wonder why he hadn't just asked for someone to translate it for him. But this thought soon passed she found herself rather grateful he hadn't. After all the things the Jedi had done for her Queen and her people it would be nice to be able to return the favour even if it was as small as translating the Naboo writing.
Approaching quietly she took a seat by him about to offer her help when he politely asked about the Queen to which she smiled sadly and bowed her head briefly.
"She is doing well, a bit anxious to return to Naboo. but that is to be expected. I've informed her of the message we recieved in her absense and your thoughts on the matter. She has agreed that the course of action taken was wise, and has commended you for your prompt thinking."
She paused for a moment before shyly admitting her thoughts.
"To be honest, it's such a relief to have her back here safe and sound. It's not that I doubt your Master's abilities, but as her handmaiden I'm always on edge when I am unable to do my duty. It's as though I feel its my fault if anything should happen to her, even if I know it's not plausable to think this way."
She then fell silent as her eyes fell onto the generator in question furrowing her brow slightly she casted him a shy smile.
"Would you mind if I helped you with this?"
She asked motioning to the device.
"I'm not much of a mechanic but I can at least translate and I have had a little training pertaining to the pitches and sound effects emitted from these generators. It might help with the security problems.
That is if you don't mind my helping..."
My prompt thinking? he thought. No, I was merely following orders...Qui-Gon told me not to have them make any contact... But before he could tell her as much, Sabé was opening up to him.
Obi-Wan looked at her, wondering if upon their return she would continue the ruse. If so, that meant she would be placed in even more danger as a battle would no doubt ensue. His thoughts drifted to the dream he had had about the masked warrior...
'Oh,' he said upon her question, noting the shy smile that seemed to tug at his heart though he was not quite fully aware of it. He swallowed before saying, 'Yes, your help would be most welcomed.'
Sabe felt his eyes study her for a moment and it caused her cheeks to warm further as her eyes fell to her hands. I hope he doesn't think less of me for admitting such a weakness she inwardly feared mistaking his observation to be that of dissappointment. Here he is helping a world that looks upon his Order as though they are nothing more then baby thieves, risking his life no less for us and I am babbling about my fears as though he doesn't have enough on his mind already. The thought seemed to make her even more shy as she furrowed her brow.
At his acceptance she practically beamed. While she wasn't very good at mechanics she was grateful to be able to offer some assistance where she could. Bowing slightly in reply she rose to her feet an approached the area in question before glancing back briefly.
"Please excuse my lack of knowledge but I trust its supposed to go into the opening over here?"
She asked sheepishly once more wishing she knew more about such things and hoping he wouldn't think her foolish for asking what is no doubt a painfully simple questions.
Taking advantage of her willingness to share her knowledge, he too rose swiftly to his feet, grabbing the piece he had been trying to figure out. She was pointing to the spot he had already hooked up successfully.
'Er,' he said, scratching the back of his neck before gesturing to the area in front of him. 'I thought it was supposed to go within the conductors on this side...'
He looked at her cautiously. 'Unless I completely hooked up the wrong piece on your end and this is supposed to go here instead...' His cheeks flushed, embarrassed at showing any failing in her eyes, though he did not understand why he should fear such a thing.
Obi-Wan took another look at the two different pieces, furrowing his brow in concentration. 'It would help if I knew what this said,' he added, pointing to the Nabooan letters.
As he moved to join her Sabe stepped aside so he could take a look at where she had been pointing. But to his sheepish reply she glanced back to the connectors feeling her own cheeks lighting on fire.
"Oh dear, you're probably right...So it's actually supposed to go in here?"
She remarked as she studied the area in front of the Jedi whose cheeks further flushed as he quietly back tracked wondering if perhaps he had placed them wrong. Glancing to him Sabe bit her lip slightly as she couldnt' help but find his humble nature rather endearing. I should be the one embarrassed she mused, I'm the one who has no idea about anything pertaining to mechanics or ship repairs.
But as he pointed to the writing Sabe eyes promptly settled onto it as she furrowed her brow.
"It looks like a warning actually reminding mechanics to pay attention to...oh..."
She bit her lip feeling apologetic as her eyes settled onto the generator in his hand. As the warning surmised Obi-Wan had unintentionally put the parts in the wrong conductor. Reading further she promptly learnt why and though it was of no fault of her own Sabe was embarrassed to have to tell him this.
"...It would seem that because this is an older generator design it has to go where you connected the other piece. Apparently it has something to do with the conductors needing some sort of power flux to counterbalance the differences in the powerflow?"
She sheepishly explained remembering vaguelly about how the ship's pilot bragged about how this particular design was capable of handling improv repairs should it ever be needed. Although the concept was generally meant for ships designed for frontline battles it was deemed necessary to add this particular trait to the Queen's new ship as well which proved to be a saving grace all things considering.
"I admit I have no idea how that is supposed to work but I suppose they figure its more efficient this way?"
She said feeling more then a little foolish at her lack of knowledge of the topic at hand.
"So in other words technically you had it right all along."
She surmised with a shrug and a shy smile before she moved to grab what she hoped to be the right tool to remove the second part that was now to be moved to the conductors.
'Ah because that would make too much sense,' he said, shaking his head as took another look at the spot she was speaking of. Obi-Wan had to admit he was quite shocked at her extensive knowledge of hyperdrive mechanics. He didn't think it was something they included in handmaiden training.
Once removing the other part he had installed, everything seemed to fit together much better. All thanks to Lady Sabé.
'Well that should do it,' he said, ready to switch it on. 'Let's see...'
He turned it on and it roared to life. 'Finally!' he exclaimed. Beaming, he looked to her. 'Thank you. I couldn't have done it without your help.'
She glanced back to him and gave him a sheepish smile as she shyly replied.
"I wouldn't have guessed it if it wasn't for the warning or the fact we had to learn about such things in school."
She felt her cheeks burn as felt the need to explain further.
"We were taught about the effect of energy flow through mechanics and its effects on the pitch which dictates the power...It's part of the musical training I went through back on Theed."
She sheepishly remarked as she tried to help him as he removed the parts and switched them around. As predicted things seemed to slip into place and she couldn't help but grin as Obi-Wan activated the switch causing it to roar to life.
"It worked!"
She exclaimed in relief before blushing deeply at his thanks as she bowed her head obviously humbled by his words.
"Your most welcome Jedi Kenobi. I'm just glad I could have been of some small assistance."
She sheepishly replied before biting her lip as she couldn't help but wonder if he was hungry. It was mid afternoon already and he had been in the engine room since morning. Besides she told herself even if Master Jinn didnt' run into trouble it would still be at least another hour before he would return if the Queen's estimate pertaining the time it took to return here from Mos Eisley was accurate.
"I know this probably sounds like a silly question, but I don't suppose you'd be interested in some late lunch would you? I mean...Well you have been working on this since morning and all."
She shyly asked wondering if perhaps she was being too intrusive after all he know doubt had enough on his mind without having her nagging him to eat.
'Now that you mention it, I am hungry,' he said in reponse to her query. Obi-Wan smiled heartily at her polite and thoughtful suggestion.
'I don't suppose you would be interested in joining me? That is, if you don't have other queenly duties to attend to, of course.'
He risked winking at her as he started for the room's exit, partially wishing she didn't have decoy duties for then she wouldn't have to wear the layers of makeup that hid her true face.
Sabe couldn't resist a look of relief at his words as she realized she hadn't indeed crossed the line. She rose to her feet and couldn't resist a shy smile at his invitation. She hadn't expected him to invite her to join him, but was sincerely glad he did. She rather enjoyed his company, his witty retorts and the humbled explanations given whenever she couldn't resist her curiousity and thirst for knowledge.
However at his wink all attempts to not be so shy around the Jedi Padawan soon dissappeared as Sabe felt her cheeks warm. Bowing her head in reply she quietly offered another smile as she shook her head.
"...I would be honoured to join you."
She finally said inwardly grateful and more then a little overjoyed upon realizing for the moment her duties did not demand she play the decoy. Though she knew in truth it was a selfish thought one that brought about some guilt she also couldn't deny the fact this was a rare moment indeed, one she was loathed not to enjoy for all that it was worth.
Glancing back to him once more her expression turned a little sheepish as they headed towards the dining rooms.
"I know Eirtae had made some Kwanzo burgers for lunch but they are so disgusting I wouldn't advise eating them."
She promptly then apologized, not wishing to speak ill of her friend.
"It's not to say that she is a bad cook in truth she is far better then i'd ever be, but Kwonzo burgers are terrible to begin with even the greatest chef couldn't do them justice. But not to worry I have something else far better in mind."
She added with a friendly smile before falling silent as she feared perhaps she was babbling. A trait she often did when she was a bit nervous or excited. Two feelings that she couldn't quite deny though try as she might in this moment.
Obi-Wan didn't bother hiding his joy to find that she was free to eat with him.
'I try to stay away from anything resembling nerfburgers in name or appearance,' he said, shuddering slightly as they headed for the galley.
He rummaged around the cupboards and freeze storage. 'Well, looks like we've got crispics and freeze-dry vegetables. Hmm...' He tosses the crispics back into the refrigeration unit. 'The girls must have eaten everything else,' he thought aloud. 'I suppose I could throw together some sad immitation of Runyip stew if you're up for it. It might take awhile.'
He figured Qui-Gon would appreciate something to eat upon his return as well. And no doubt the boy would be hungry too seeing as how he was a slave and all...
She felt her heart skip a beat as she noted his obvious joy at the fact she would be able to join him. At his remarks pertaining to Nerfburgers Sabe laughs softly.
"I agree whole heartedly."
As they entered Sabe rummaged through the cupboards as well and beamed in joy upon moving back the old spice jars to discover the pastry she had hidden for later. It was a rare treat to stumble upon and upon hearing his words she grinned glancing back at him.
"That sounds like a wonderful idea! But only if you agree to let me help."
She remarked as she pulled out the hidden pastry before casting him a grin.
"Look there is one thing the others hadn't found!"
She offered it to him.
"It's quite good, I think you will like it!"
She commented before feeling a little sheepish as she feared perhaps she was being too forward.
"that is if you're interested of course."
She added shyly.
'If I turned down your offer to help,' he said, as he set out the ingredients to begin, 'then I would probably end up putting this together backwards.' He chuckled.
When Sabé retrieved some sort of pastry, Obi-Wan's eyes lit up. 'One of my favourites! Wherever did you get this?' Of course he'd love to have some of it. he hadn't tasted it in, what, five years? He couldn't remember.
Sabe laughed softly in reply as she casted him a quick sheepish glance over her shoulder.
"I think in truth it would be the other way around. I'm not so good at cooking I admit, but at least I can earn points for trying."
She said with a grin before noting his eyes lit up as she offered him the pastry in question. Well that answered that question that she inwardly thought in joy happy to have learnt her fear was misfounded.
"Rabe and Eirtae made them last night, but given how quick they dissappear I thought I'd hide one for later. I wasn't sure you'd like it but...I'm glad to know I was wrong."
She said instantly realizing her mistake as she just admitted to the real reason of hiding the pastry. In truth she wasn't sure she'd be given the chance to offer it to him and was debating of a way to leave it in such a place where he could stumble upon it. But thankfully fate seemed to have intervine and she didn't have to chance another finding it before he did.
Moving quietly she grabbed some of hte vegetables and began to cut them in preparation for the stew hoping he wouldn't notice her blushing cheeks.
He had a hunch as the meal fell together almost seemlessly that she had understated her cooking abilities and was surprised how well they worked together. Obi-Wan never much cared for the culinary arts, as it was more a necessity than anything else, but the company made the act more enjoyable to say the least.
With the layers of makeup, it was easy for the padawan to miss Sabé's blush, however, he was unable to miss the feelings coming from her, which only added to his own rosy cheeks.
As the pot simmered, he allowed his eyes to linger on her, studying her as if trying to figure something out, though in reality he hadn't a clue just what he was trying to figure out.
Sabe though normally not one to exactly enjoy cooking soon found herself quite caught up with the preparations of the stew. It felt as though they had done this many times before together despite it being the first time as they seemed to compliment the other so well. Though she told herself cooking wasn't so bad with company Sabe inwardly knew the truth of the matter wasn't due to having company but rather being in this particular Jedi's company. But promptly she buried the thought not exactly comfortable where this train of mindset was headed.
Soon the ingredients of the stew was prepared and it was only a matter of time before it had simmered long enough to be ready. As she moved to clean up the mess made in their preparations Sabe could almost feel his eyes lingering on her and it caused her cheeks to warm. Leaving her to once more be grateful for the fact the make-up hid the blush well. However even she couldn't deny the sight of seeing the Jedi Padawan's cheeks warm moments ago was oddly touching. She had grown used to his emotions being something he didn't broadcast openly and in truth it only served to amplify the subtle gestures that she was able to pick up on. This too served as a lesson to be learnt, one she hadn't been aware of till recently.
Unlike most beliefs the Jedi were permitted to bear emotions, the key however was in the fact they could control those feelings rather then the other way around. It was this realization that only added to her respect for the Jedi by her although in this moment it too served to add to her curiousity. Though she tried to be subtle she couldn't resist casting a brief glance in his direction. He looked almost pensive, or lost in his thoughts which made Sabe curious as to what he could possibly be thinking about especially if it had anything to do with the studious gaze she felt on her before.
He fetched two bowls for them to use and served her first before filling his own bowl. The stew didn't turn out half bad and he was pleased with the result.
'Better than nerfburgers, at least,' he decided, grinning as he spooned another bite in his mouth.
It was hard for Obi-Wan to admit, but he figured he ought to be thinking what was to come when they reached Coruscant, but he was still oddly mesmerised with thoughts of the decoy queen. She intrigued him and he had all sorts of questions for her, though he dared not ask.
His gaze soon found the bowl once more for its contents were so much more easily defined than the girl in front of him.
She set the table as he filled their bowls with the stew before quietly joining him as she began to eat obviously impress with the end results. In truth it tasted better then any of her attempts to make the stew.
As though picking up her thoughts his remarks caused Sabe to laugh softly as she nodded in agreement.
"Far better then anything I could cook up on my own thats for sure. Seriously though this is quite good, thank you, Obi-Wan"
She remarked sincerely taking the chance to refer to him by his given name rather then his surname as a comfortable silence seemed to fall between them as she quietly eats. Though try as she might her eyes seem to have a mind of their own leaving her to constantly cast him glances as she noted his sudden intence interest in his food.
Not wishing the silence to turn awkward Sabe thought she would take the chance and divulge into her curiousity once more. There was much she would have liked to known about the Jedi before her but much of her questions she couldn't be quite sure if he would regard as intrusive.
But as her eyes once more fell onto the long braid the decorated his features Sabe decided to start from there.
"Might I ask what the metaphorical meaning of the Padawan's braid represents? What about those who do not have hair to make the braid, how to they mark themselves as Padawans?"
She asked shyly hoping once more he would humour her curiousity and not find her questions silly or simple.
Whilst he focused on his stew, Obi-Wan felt her eyes on him and it took all his restraint not to look up. He wondered what she could possibly be thinking about and then she hit him with a question.
'Oh,' he said, feeling his cheeks light on fire once more. 'The braid symbolizes our loyalty to the Order. It marks the us as padawans so as to differentiate between the learners and the knights. The braid is sheered off by our master during the knighting ceremony. As for those without hair, well, some of them chose to wear a sash or ribbon attached to their utility belts in a similiar way.'
He broke off, self-consciously before posing a question of his own. 'What about you? I mean, is there some way that handmaidens are differentiated between each other or from the person they serve?' He didn't think the Naboo had a caste system of any kind, but the whole concept of handmaidens intrigued him...albeit a certain handmaiden over the others.
Her question seemed to make him blush even further and Sabe bit her lip inwardly concerned perhaps she asked something inappropriate but he answered her all the same and for the moment it both satisfied and piqued her curiosity at the same time.
"Oh I see. So it represents the transition within the Order then?"
She looked a little sheepish as he explained how those without hair revealed their ranks.
"I should have guessed. About the sash or ribbon I mean."
Sabe shyly replied suddenly feeling as though her question was more silly then she initially feared he would think.
But soon more questions filled her thoughts and once more she couldn't help but ask.
"So if the Padawan's have braides represent their titles, what about the Knights and Masters? Do they have seperate symbols as well?"
But soon the question is turned on her and Sabe found her eyes instinctivally widening as her already rosey cheeks just burn up as though they held infernos within. Glancing away quickly she reminded herself repeatedly the poor Jedi before her truly had no idea what he had asked. That in truth it was an innocent question all the same, despite the awkward explanation that was certain to result.
Clearing her throat she suddenly found her bowl to be suddenly very fascinating as Sabe pooled her thoughts together choosing her words carefully.
"Um well...When a handmaiden earns her title she spends the rest of her life serving whomever is the reigning royality at the time. Even after the Queen has served her time the handmaidens remain by her side until either the handmaiden herself chooses to retire - usually to begin a family of her own or the former Queen chooses to dismiss them..."
Now comes the awkward part she thought feeling her cheeks warm further if that was even humanly possible.
"...But to differentiate between the handmaidens we are each branded on the left or right side of our hip, (depending on our dominant hand) with the crest of our Queen's house..."
She couldn't bring herself to explain that the location was chosen because in ancient times the woman's hips was a symbol of motherhood or family - the highest most powerful form of loyality to her culture. To even admit it's location made Sabe want to do nothing more then crawl in a hole and hide from embarrassment. Yet she felt the need to explain knowing his question was asked out of innocence and the fact he had already indulged her questions pertaining to his Order's traditions. Even so it did little to calm her embarrassed thoughts. As such eager to move on from the delicate admittance she promptly concluded.
"It was a tradition that started in the early days of our people's culture. Like your braid it is meant to mark our loyality to the Queen we serve and ultimately to Naboo itself."
Obi-Wan was taken aback by the waves of mortification that seemed to drip off her at his question. He felt bad; that he ought not have asked such a question, harmless as he thought it would be.
He studied her again, curiously.
Finally she revealed that she was branded with a tattoo and where exactly it was located and he went crimson as well. His mouth was in the shape of an 'O' as his eyes widened.
When he got around to speaking, he could only say 'Oh,' not daring to enquire further.
However, in his mind, he tried to recall the royal symbol of Naboo and how it would look on her naked hip, but found he had difficulty picturing it and chided himself for attempting to. It was quite inappropriate.
Eventually he said, 'I hope you did not think I was being rude in asking you...'
She trudged onwards with her explanation despite the fact from the corner of her eyes she could see his own features turn as red as hers felt. It certainly wasn't how she wanted to explain her peoples traditions pertaining to the handmaidens but it was too late now to back down and so she tried her best maintain what little dignity she had left.
The simple response only confirmed the awkward embarrassment that had settled between them and Sabe found herself once more envious of Padme's ability to turn any awkward situation around. If only I were so good with words she inwardly fretted her eyes never daring to leave her bowl now feeling almost ashamed for having been so open as to admit as much as she had.
But at his question she couldn't help but blush further feeling bad for embarrassing him as she did. Casting him a shy glance Sabe shook her head slightly in reply.
"Oh no it's alright...After all how could you have possibly known?..."
She remarked sheepishly before biting her lip.
"Its my fault I started the whole thing after all..."
'No, it was just a learning experience,' Obi-Wan replied. They had nothing to be sorry for, but they had unconsciously begun a cycle of needless apologies that would last them a lifetime.
'And I am grateful for your curiousity. Your questions have a way of keeping me on my toes,' he admitted shyly. He did not dare admit his own queries were out of curiousity of her in general as well as that of the Naboo.
She nodded in agreement her expression though sheepish was turning a little more relaxed at his gracious reply. But at his shy admittance Sabe couldn't help but smile a little. She was relieved to know he didn't mind her many questions or the fact more often then not her curiousity always got the better of her.
"I'm relieved that you don't mind my many questions."
She sheepishly admitted in reply.
"Nor that you think me too nosey for asking them.
I hope you know, I don't mind if you have questions of your own...I can't say I'll be able to answer them all but I'll do my best."
She added with a shy smile.
'Knowledge is highly valued amongst the Jedi,' he said honestly. 'And questions, no matter how nosey or unintelligent they may seem to you, help you attain that knowledge, do they not?' He smiled shyly.
Obi-Wan then realised they hadn't got anything for the two of them to drink and promptly moved to remedy that, finding a package of some sort of tea he hadn't tried before and poured boiling water over it, serving it in two small mugs and setting the kettle on the table between them.
At his words once more Sabe found herself to be touched. He always seemed to have a way of getting her gaurd down in such a gentle fashion she almost found it hard to ever mind it. His shy smile instantly disarmed any awkwardness that may have lingered, and soon the decoy was returning it once more her eyes sparkling as inwardly she couldn't help but admit she rather liked how he looked when he smiled.
As he rose to his feet Sabe moved quietly as well reaching to take their bowls as she placed then in the sink nearby before returning as he brought over two mugs and the kettle. Smiling she couldn't resist teasing as she was about to do something simuliar herself.
"You read my mind didn't you?"
She remarked as she returned to her seat.
"I was just about to get us some tea."
'No--I didn't--' he began automatically. Then he realised she was just teasing him.
'Well, they say great minds think alike,' Obi-Wan replied, shooting her a slightly mischievous look, though he hadn't purposely set out to be at all mischievous.
Come to think of it, he hadn't a clue why being around her made him act like this. Nor was he able to read anything into it. He gave her a full mug first before tending to his own which was still too hot to drink.
She beamed at his quick recovery as he realized she was but teasing him. His slightly mischevious expression inwardly surprised her but it was a pleasant surprise to say the least. It was a side of him she had yet to see and once more it reminded Sabe of how little time she really knew of the Jedi before her. And at the sametime how much more she wished she did know of him. If only the circumstances would permit such a chance.
But of all the dark legends and beliefs surrounding the Jedi only one seemed to prove accurate. They only revealed their presence in times of danger, while she once believed this to be a bad omen that troubled was stirring she now knew they only appeared to tend to the threat before moving onwards. Once Naboo was safe again she knew he would be gone onto his next mission. While the thought of her people being free and safe filled her with much joy, there was a lingering sadness that now lingered in her mind that wasn't there before.
However this thought passed even before she had a chance to register it as she couldn't help but laugh softly at his words before taking a slight bow.
"Coming from you Jedi Kenobi that is a compliment I cannot refuse. Thank you."
She meant to say in teasing but it came out a bit more serious then she would have liked. Her cheeks flushed slightly but she decided not to dwell on it too much as she graciously accepted and thanked him for the tea before turning curious once more.
"So once all of this has settled, where will you be headed then? Or do your superiors not give you the details of your next mission until the previous one is completed?"
She asked though not exactly wanting to admit the true reason of her curiousity which was to hint whether or not there was even a slim chance their pathes might cross once again in the future.
At her question, Obi-Wan shrugged his shoulders. 'I'm not sure. I hadn't thought about it to be honest.' He felt a bit embarrassed to admit such a thing, but it was true. He didn't spend very much time making plans since his life belonged to the Order and whatever decisions the Council made and what his master decided to adhere to or not adhere to decided his life for him.
'Sometimes missions can be called short if the Council needs them to be elsewhere,' he offered. 'As for me, I just do what my master tells me... Not to say I don't disagree with his decisions on occassion...but I trust his judgement and as a padawan it is not my place to disagree...' This was a touchy subject for him. He felt he was ready to take the trials, but Qui-Gon insisted he wasn't attentive enough with the Living Force, that he still had much to learn...
'And you're free to leave service whenever you chose, even though you are bound to serve your lady?' he said, changing it around on her once more. The concept baffled him.
Sabe nodded her expression turning pensive at his admittance. She too understood how one could be so caught up in their mission little else seemed to matter.
"It's so easy to caught up in your duties that everything else fades into the background isn't it."
She said gently noting the slight embarrassment in his admittance. As he further explained himself Sabe grew curious and thoughtful at his words.
"I know how hard it can be to have to stand by and watch your superiors or in your case your Master make decisions you don't exactly agree with."
She too admitted sheepishly, thinking of how Padme with her pacifist idealism starkly contrasted her own pragmatic personality.
But the question soon turned to her once more and Sabe smiled slightly in reply finding his curiousity at such a concept to be oddly endearing.
"Yes, although one dedicates their life to the Queen's service we are given the right to retire should we decide our pathes have taken us elsewhere. Normally this course of action is only chosen when one wishes to be married.
Though marriage isn't forbidden for a handmaiden such a course of action usually demands that they retire. It's because the job of a handmaiden is filled with danger and requires undivided loyalty to the queen. So single girls are generally prefered because of this."
Her expression then turned more serious as Sabe found herself staring at her hands. She couldn't quite explain the need to admit this concious truth but for some reason she just felt it was necessary. Whether it was because it was a way to show the young Jedi she understood and empathized with his Order's need for lack of attachment or the fact she wanted him impress upon him that she took her duties as seriously as he did she couldn't say.
"However, when I was initiated into my Queen's service...I swore that I would keep to my oaths until she passed to the other side. Some of my fellow handmaiden's find me to be too hard on myself to make such a demand, but it is an honour for me to serve a her and to depart for such personal reasons just seems well, inappropriate for me."
She casted him a shy glance as if to find some silent support in his expression. Yet all the while finding herself realizing he probably understood her words far more then she could have ever imagined.
For one so young, he was suprised she had consciously made such a decision, to bind herself to serve her queen. But then he thought of the Jedi and saw that their lives were far more similiar than he thought possible. He also suprised himself by hoping that he would see her again after this mission was completed.
He nodded when she cast him a glance.
Lady Sabé was so self-sacrificing, loyal, and true. All of these were admirable qualities that were not seen often these days. He did not make the connection that they were qualities he exuded as well.
A sincere smile crept into her features as she noted his nod at her glance. Her eyes briefly turn soft before she looked away. He understood and for a moment she felt as though she had made a connection, a mutual understanding of duty that she never thought she would ever find in another outside of the Queen herself. She couldn't quite explain why she had spoken this outloud in truth it wasn't something that he really needed to know as it was a personal pact of sorts that was meant for her alone.
"I know this probably sounds silly to you, me admitting to such things, especially considering it is just a given for the Jedi Order."
She admitted sheepishly as she found her eyes returning to him once more. It was both comforting and intriguing to know she wasn't the only one who felt this way. Though she would never dare suggest or even think she was even remotely as close to being as noble and honourable as the Jedi sitting before her Sabe felt deeply humbled to think that there was this one small thing they both shared in common.
Obi-Wan felt a rush of embarrassment from her once again, but it was of a different nature, much more personal and he couldn't pinpoint the exact cause, for she hadn't said anything that he would deem humiliatiing.
Yet, he hadn't said anything so it couldn't have been something he said...was it that he didn't say anything?
'It's not silly,' he said almost defensively...defensive of her. 'On the contrary, I think it's courageous and admirable of you to choose such an honourable path.'
He spoke this all quite quickly and without considering it might be too forward.
Sabe instantly felt humbled and touched by his words as she bowed her head slightly in reply. Her cheeks warmed as inwardly she felt her heart skip a beat to his words having unconciously noted the quick reply and hint of defence found in his voice.
"...I just, well I just hate to think..."
She bit her lip looking very sheepish.
"I just don't want you to think of me as being so arrogant that I believe myself to be on the same level as one of your order. Because I don't and I never would I mean, I would never consider such pompous thoughts..."
And I'm stammering like a fool, she inwardly thought feeling her cheeks burn as she tried to recover as best she can.
"I've come to admire the Order you serve that is all and I wanted you to know that I share some of your beliefs in such matters..."
But you already know and understand that and I should do the smart thing and stop talking while I still have some semblence of dignity left. She thought as she fell silent, feeling more like a fool then ever before and yet not registering why she felt the sudden urge to connect with the young Jedi before her.
Her stammering and then falling silent made Obi-Wan feel bad that he had made her so self-conscious. He endeavoured to remedy the situation.
'You are by far one of the least arrogant people I've ever met and I think it's quite noble that you've decided to dedicate your life to such devoted service. And I'm glad you don't hate the Jedi, despite the reservations you and your people have...'
He was being quite truthful, but it did not register with him just how deeply affected he was by her words, hoping she was not only referring to the Order, but to him as well, that he had not made a bad impression.
Though why he should think of such things or even care what she thought did not make it to the forefront of his thoughts.
At his gracious compliments Sabe bowed her head feeling less then worthy of such high praise and yet quite moved to hear it all the same. Especially from the Jedi before her to whom she held with much respect and high regard.
Her cheeks burned with silent humility as it took all of her willpower not to be rude and stare at her cup of tea as she shyly replied.
"Jedi Kenobi I don't know what to say...It's mean alot to me that you view me in such a light. Thank you. "
She admitted before offering a shy smile.
"You do realize you are the reason I now have such respect for your Order. You are nothing like how I imagined the Jedi would be like. I have learnt so much from you these past few days and for that I am most grateful and will always be endebted to you."
'I am most grateful and will always be indebted to you...'
Indebted? Obi-Wan was certainly surprised at her protestation. Surely he hadn't made such an impression as all of that.
He didn't know what to make of it, nor what he could possibly say in response. He did, however, know if he didn't say anything then she would once again feel embarrassed. He was beginning to be able to read her ds more attunely and even project her reactions to things.
He didn't know just why this was, that he was more attune to her now, nor was he quite aware of this growing connection.
'I'm glad I haven't left you with a foul impression,' he said timidly, also finding his cup of tea to be quite interesting. 'To earn the respect of a lady such as yourself means a great deal to me,' he admitted.
Sabe fell silent instantly fearing that perhaps she had said something that might be regarded as inappropriate. She couldn't quite explain it but she could almost sense that he was surprised by her words. However the thought just seemed foolish to Sabe who, having no training outside of mental walls couldn't possibly comprehend or even register the growing mental connection between the Jedi Padawan and herself.
But his timid words and admittance didn't go unnoticed by the decoy as she found herself glancing up at him as he stared at his tea. Her eyes wavered as she felt her heart skip a beat at his words, though she couldn't quite fully register why. After all he was a Jedi and she but a handmaiden. While such thoughts though not forbidden wasn't something she ever focussed on or was even familiar with. Which only added to the strange confusion that was brought on by the brief budding of emotions that would become gradually familiar to her in the future.
But for the moment she felt her cheeks burn as her eyes swiftly returned to her cup of tea as she stammered a reply.
"You hardly left a 'foul impression'...If anything you did quite the opposite. I mean, in that you have dispelled many of the prejudices I once held for your Order."
She blushed further as she softly added.
"You humble me with your kind words."
He finally looked up enough to notice her cup of tea was nearly empty, so he reached over to grab the kettle and refill her glass. As he moved to set it back down, his hand brushed over hers lightly, briefly, but he felt a spark at the touch of her skin.
Obi-Wan didn't understand what it meant, but he felt something he hadn't felt before. This was new, but not in the least obstrusive or uninviting.
'Sorry,' he said as if he had burnt her with the tea, though his eyes on her were paradoxically unapologetic.
As she glanced away as her brief bravery having long since dissappeared Sabe noticed from the corner of her eye that he was reaching for the kettle. Her eyes automatically settled on his cup as she felt bad for being such a poor host and not offering him more. But his cup was nearly full and her cheeks warmed as she realized he was playing host to her. Softly she thanked him as she moved her cup to make it more convenient to for him to pour more tea. But as he moved to set the kettle down she felt his hand touch hers by accident or so it would appear to her and the result was nothing she could have explained.
It was almost electrical. Like an unseen flicker of energy that seemed to jump between their fingers upon contact. It was nothing like Sabe had ever felt before and with it brought on a brief wave of unfamiliar but pleasant emotions. She apologized immediately and at the same time as the Jedi did as she felt both concious of simple touch and yet intrigued by the strange reaction it had encouraged.
Her cheeks warmed as she realized she had spoken at the same time he did and without meaning to her eyes glanced up at him as she briefly met his eyes. And just like the first time their pathes had crossed Sabe found herself musing at how they reminded her so much of the lakes that decorated the country side of Naboo. The thought instantly caused her cheeks to warm further as she realized she was staring and quickly she looked away wanting to say something but unable to find the words to do so.
Their simultaneous apology leant more to his blush than the new emotions, since he was as of yet unable to identify them. He was also partially unable to tell if they were registering from her or if they had been caused by her...or both.
Obi-Wan did, however, decide if given the chance he would like to explore this further.
Still a bit tenative around the subject, he remarked off-handedly, 'What sort of tea is this? I quite like it.'
The spark still heated his hand and he resisted the urge to touch the spot with his other hand.
She was grateful for Obi-Wan's gracious change of topic and the fact he was too polite to notice that she had been staring at him.
"Oh, the tea is fairly common on Naboo and mainly consists of leaves from Paonga seaweed. I'm glad you like it. I've been told by others who aren't natives to my homeworld that it is an aquired taste."
She remarked with a kind smile as unconciously her other hand slipped to where their fingers had briefly met as though some part of her wanted to cling onto the strange tingling that still remained and the unfamiliar yet pleasant emotions it had awakened.
"What about you? Is there a certain tea that Jedi such as yourself prefer to drink?"
Obi-Wan didn't miss her hand slipping to the point of contact, wondering if she had felt it too.
Paonga seaweed, interesting, he thought.
'Well I had an affinity for Stim Tea before, but this is my new favourite,' he remarked. 'It's a nice, rich, bitter flavour, but cleansing, refreshing... Thank you for sharing it with me.'
Sabe tilted her head slightly as her expression turned curious.
"Stim tea? I can't say I've heard of it before."
She commented before offering a warm smile as he explained this had now become a new favorite for him. Rising quickly to her feet Sabe couldn't resist as she moved back to the cupboards once more.
Glancing back to him she practically beamed.
"I'm glad you liked it! I rather like it's potency myself it certainly works well to wake one up in the morning to say the least."
She then moved more things around before finding a small bag of the seaweed that hadn't been yet opened. Grabbing it she moved back to the table and offered it to him.
"I'm not sure how accessible this sort of tea is off world given that it isn't exactly popular...Well I thought perhaps you'd like some to take with you...In case you get tired of Stim tea or...want a change..."
She said feeling her bravado slipping away as she spoke. She always liked to share things that she knew others enjoyed it was something she couldn't help and yet she hoped he wouldn't be offended by her gesture. Especially given that Jedi weren't one for keeping personal possessions, although would tea be considered personal she inwardly wondered as she gently gave it to him.
When she fetched a bag of seaweed for brewing the tea and offered it to him, his eyes lit up. 'Thank you,' he said enthusiastically. He hoped it wouldn't be missed from their storage, but trusted Sabé wouldn't give it away if it was so valuable to them that it would be missed.
He would drink it in moderation, preserving the package for as long as possible, knowing each sip would remind him of Naboo, but even more potently of his time on this starship, chatting with royal handmaiden and loya decoy queen, Sabé Nabish.
Though he had watched her brew the tea before, he asked anyway, 'Are there any special tricks to brewing it?'
Sabe grinned grateful to note he was neither dissappointed or offended by her gesture. Bowing her head slightly in reply she gently spoke.
"You are most welcome Jedi Kenobi. It is a pleasure to be able to share something that we both enjoy."
For even though our paths will take us far away from each other I hope you'll remember me when you enjoy this tea. She inwardly thought to herself as I know I will always remember this moment whenever I enjoy it.
At his question she blushed slightly, not because she felt offence by it, rather the fact she completely forgotten to inform him of its preparation. An imporant detail indeed she inwardly groused and you almost missed it.
"Well I'm not sure how you normally prepare your stim tea but it outside of boiling the leaves there is little in the way of tricks. Although I should warn you to use the leaves sparingly as it is quite potent and be sure to remove the leaves once the water is boiled, otherwise it will leave a sour aftertaste when you drink it."
She explained with a kind but slightly sheepish smile inwardly wondering how she could have been so distracted to have missed bringing this up.
Her silence made him curious. She was thinking about something that made her cheeks colour enough to be seen through the caked on makeup, mostly around her eyes.
Certainly it had nothing to do with a brewing process. Had she picked up on his thoughts? No, she wasn't trained. It would be impossible for her to do so without proper training. What in the blazes was she thinking about? It wasn't polite to ask...
But before Obi-Wan had the chance, Sabé explained how to brew it and he nodded in understanding.
Sabe noted the curiousity that flickered into his features but brushed it off as it pertaining to his interest in the tea.
But as he nodded in understanding, Sabe found her thoughts taking another shift in direction and with it the embarrassment shifted and turned to silent concern. It was the same thoughts that always plagued her now and had been since the day her Queen and herself had almost been taken hostage back on Theed. She felt guilty for sharing this happy moment with the young Jedi when so many of her people were suffering back at home. For being able to have a proper meal and a soft bed to sleep on when so many were trapped in camps starving. The thought was sobering and soon Sabe found herself wanting to talking to someone about the troubles that had been lingering in her mind since the fateful day on theed.
Furrowing her brow slightly she studied him for a moment before she politely asked her voice soft and weighted with sadness.
"Ever since this entire situation has come to pass I have found myself replaying everything in my mind. I mean the meetings and confrontations with the Trade Federation. Although I know I have no say in these matters, I fear for my Queen and the position this has all put her in.
While our people value our Queen and what she represents I know there are others who only see her for her age. They believe because she is so young she can't possibly have the wisdom to lead."
She fell silent unsure why she felt the need to open up to the young Jedi before but unable to resist either as she gently continued.
"I worry that they will try to take advantage of this. Try to manipulate her because of her inherent innocence and lack of life experience. I wish there was something I could do to ensure her words do not fall on deaf ears, that her plea is taken seriously."
She sighed softly as her hand unconciously moved to rub her brow only to stop in time to avoid smudging the carefully laid make-up.
"...I just want this entire situation to work out. So much is at stake and every minute that passes means one less chance we have to save our people. I wish there was something more that I could do."
She admitted before turning sheepish as she realized she had been babbling.
"I'm sorry its not like you don't have enough on your mind already as it is without having my fears being dumped on you."
First they were sharing tea and now she was sharing her thoughts. He listened to her express her fears and concerns, loath to admit he had been thinking about a little bit as well. And for some reason, he also wondered if Sabé had ever been to Coruscant before and hoped she would find it a favourable planet, though it was nothing like Naboo.
'As I have only met you as the queen, I cannot attest to her presence as a ruler, but if she's anything like how you represent her, I have no doubt she will make an outstanding impression on the senate...'
He too hoped it would work out, that the plea would be listened to, that the Naboo would be released from this invasion and soon. Obi-Wan planned on sticking around to see peace restored to their planet if only to see Sabé smile.
She bowed her head humbled by his words and yet relieved to know she had represented her queen properly and not brought her any dishonour through her actions.
"I am humbled by your words Jedi Kenobi and am most relieved to know that I have presented her well in your eyes."
She said finally unable to hide another hint of a shy smile before turning serious once more as she furrowed her brow.
"But I truly hope you are right and that her impression on the Senate will work in the favor of the Naboo."
She felt her stomach flutter at the thought. So much had happened in the past few days it was almost hard to keep up with it all. It was strange how as a child she always used to dream of travelling the stars and visiting new planets and experiencing new cultures. But this was nothing like she had in mind. Quietly she cleared her thoughts once more and letting her eyes briefly settle on the Jedi before her the decoy couldnt help but find herself wishing for his words of wisdom.
"I do not wish to be rude or overly bold but..."
She hesitated wondering if he would think less of her for asking such a question but promptly buried the thought as she remembered his words of earlier. The Jedi always place great respect in knowledge and it is with this thought in mind that she find her bravery returning.
"How do I deal with my fears of this situation? What is the proper course of action for me to follow Jedi Kenobi?
I mean, lets say for a moment I am the Padawan and you are the Master and I have come to you with my thoughts as I have now pertaining to a mission we are both embarking on what would you suggest I do to tend to the inner turmoil and the fear it encourages?"
It was perhaps a loaded question but one she needed to hear anyways. She always had chastized herself for her inner doubts and fears as it was something she struggled to bury over her years of training. But while a handmaiden was taught to be cool under fire there was no real education given on how to deal with personal emotions that often came unbidden during the call of duty.
The smile was brief, but it caught Obi-Wan's attention all the say. He liked it when she smiled, the way her eyes danced with an innate fire.
Then she was asking he play the master and her the padawan. The thought brought even more of these unfamiliar and as of yet undefineable feelings. He was almost defensive, rejecting the idea outright. Why was it that he was so against the idea? He did not want her to be a Jedi. He didn't want to think about her becoming one, not that she possibly could...but the idea alarmed him for some reason.
She was being hypothetical, he reminded himself. 'Hypothetically,' he began slowly, 'If I were to assume the role of master, I would first remind you that Fear is a path to the Dark Side. I would then suggest you focus on the positive. If there are things out of your control, you must learn to let them go.' He shrugged, dismissing his own advice as not worthy since he was not yet a knight.
Sabe couldn't say why but for a moment it appeared as though somehow she had offended him with her suggestion. HEr eyes turned apologetic as she realized with much shame that perhaps he thought she was mocking him. In reality she valued his opinion above anyone elses and it is with that realization that Sabe found herself growing a bit confused once again. Not for the realization itself but rather the unfamiliar emotions this too seemed to awaken. But before she had a chance to attempt to figure out how tehy could possibly be connected the Jedi spoke once more.
His choice of beginning instantly confirmed her previous concerns that she had offended him by even suggesting that she was even remotely worthy of bearing such a title nevermind training. Falling silent she listened to him aptly putting his words to memory without realizing just how important this simple statement would become to her in the years to come.
Bowing her head in humble reply she gently spoke.
"Thank you Jedi Kenobi for your insight.
However I do wish to apologize for my choice of words. I did not wish to offend you with them by suggesting I would ever be worthy to carry such a title. Rather I -"
She caught herself intime to keep from babbling once more before catching studying him with a serious gaze and a humbled expression.
"Your advice will not be squandered Jedi Kenobi. Wisdom is something so many people toss away and take for granted but I understand its importance. I will be certain to keep it in the forefront of my thoughts always."
Sensing her shift in d once again, he replied wittily, 'Well it most certainly can't be in the forefront of your thoughts all time...I mean, you do have other things to think about like which way to aim a blaster, right?' He was yet again making light of his advice though not intentionally.
He took a sip of the refreshing tea, thankful yet again to be able to share the kettle of Nabooan tea with her. And while his eyes studied hers once more, his heart warmed to think she truly did value his opinions and advice. Wise? He certainly hadn't ever thought of himself as wise. He had far too much more to learn.
She giggled to his reply grateful to know that she hadn't offended him after all and rather amused by his clever retort.
"Well in that case, it would remain in my subconcious to guide my moves and steady my thoughts."
She replied with a smile before falling silent for a moment as she sipped on her own tea studying him for a moment longer. Though she knew it was selfish of her to think such thoughts Sabe found herself rather wishing there could be some way for him to remain a little while longer once things were settled. If not for anything then to just show him around Naboo or at the very least her favorite place to unwind and train...the Dojo that was in palace. But the fanciful thoughts soon slipped away as her eyes met his gaze once more. This time she found herself oddly intrigued by what she saw in the blue orbs.
She saw a humility in his gaze one that was not due to a lack of confidence but rather the appriciation of the fact he sought knowledge. It was a wisdom that went far beyond his years a trait brought on by this hunger to learn. Sabe found she rather liked this discovery as well as the warmth that was shared in his eyes which reflected her own.
You are a good man she inwardly thought, a purehearted and humble soul. I wonder if you realize just how rare you truly are. Probably not she inwardly surmised and for some reason this thought caused her heart to warm. Though outloud she decided to break the silence as she couldn't help but remark upon his witty reply with a more serious tone.
"Why is it that you are so uncomfortable to give advice?"
She instantly regretted speaking her thoughts as she quickly backtracked and explained.
"I mean well you looked so uncomfortable when I asked I thought I had, well offended you..."
She blushed deeply then as she bit her lip inwardly chastizing herself for her bold words and even worse her curiousity and horrid need to read into body language too much.
'Oh no,' he assured her, feeling bad for having caused her to think such a thing. 'You are the last person I would think could possibly offend me. I think I'd like to think it's hard to offend me,' he added as an afterthought, then feeling a bit childish for saying such a thing.
Obi-Wan shook his head, saying, 'I don't know know...' Though he truthfully knew exactly why. He felt a bit ashamed to admit the truth, stating the obvious. 'I'm only a padawan learner, not a fully trained Jedi Knight. I shouldn't be giving advice to anyone.'
He hoped ironically that he wouldn't think ill of him for admitting such a thing after having answered her questions and given advice....but she had asked for it, hadn't she?
And why in the blazes was he over-analysing her thoughts, remarks, and behaviour anyway?
Sabe looked visibly relieved to his words and the knowledge that she hadn't offended him, as well as the fact he wasn't as sensitive to such things as she initially feared.
But as he began to explain his sheepish actions of before Sabe couldn't help but feel a little guilty for his obviously awkward reaction to her blatant question. Yet his answer however only served to confuse her. Why would he think such a thing? she inwardly mused as she tried her best to bury her curiousity only to fail once more miserably.
Tilting her head slightly she raised her brow at his admittance before quietly asking once more.
"I'm sorry I don't think I understand. Why would your title or lack thereof have anything to do with the level of your wisdom?
I mean look at Queen Amidala she's 14 years old and yet she leads an entire planet. Outsiders who do not understand are quick to scoff at her because of her age and yet here she is saving her people from the Trade Federation.
Wisdom isn't just limited to a certain age or a certain ranks, Jedi Kenobi. While you may consider yourself to be "just" a Padawan Learner I find you to be very wise and if I may be so bold, a very good teacher as well."
She paused before adding a little shyly now.
"It shames me to think that you hold such little regard towards your views and insight, especially considering how much I have learnt from you these past few days."
Shamed her? That was the least thing he wanted.
'I'm sorry,' he said, glumly. 'I did not mean to shame you in any way.' Obi-Wan cleared his throat then took a sip of tea, trying to regain lost ground.
'Padawans aren't considered...what I mean is, I do not feel I have the right to make such judgements or dole out advice since I have not earned the title of knighthood yet. That's all. I did not mean to offend or shame you in any way. I apologise.'
He hung his head, feeling as though he had failed her.
At his sad reaction Sabe inwardly kicked herself for being so inadvertantly rude. She didn't mean to hurt his feelings she only wanted him to know that she valued his words and wisdom. Hesitant she looked a little torn unsure how to respond to this, dare she admit her thoughts? Would he find it inappropriate as well? Biting her lip she furrowed her brow her eyes turning apologetic as she gently replied.
"I'm sorry that is my fault I didn't, it was a bad choice of words Jedi Kenobi."
She was careful to use his title to fortify the fact she held much respect for him. Offering a kind smile she couldn't help but continue.
"You have nothing to be ashamed about. Wisdom is meant to be shared and I am grateful that you are so kind to share it with me. I guess I was just a little surprised that you would feel that way, I mean feel that you have no right to speak such things because you are a Padawan. I may be but a decoy, a handmaiden but it doesn't mean I'm incapable of learning or sharing what little advice I may have.
Not that I'd have much to offer you that you wouldn't already know, but you understand what I mean?"
It was both tempting and confusing for Sabe who couldn't understand just why she suddenly wanted to reach over and take his hand in hers. To hold it and offer the silent support that only a simple touch can give. However she refrained deeming it completely inappropriate though in the back of her mind she couldn't help but still feel the light tingling at the edge of her fingers still; a silent reminder of their brief moemnt of contact.
'I never meant to imply that you were or are incapable of possessing or sharing wisdom, my lady,' Obi-Wan replied, not even realising that this was how she had taken his words.
'And I am sorry for implying such a thing, for it was not my intention...'
She had a look in her eyes that he could only equate with compassion, but it seemed like something else, something more personal somehow...
Sabe blushed deeply at his words as she bowed her head understanding what he meant to say and wishing somehow she knew how to convey this properly. Once more she wished that she held Padme's mastery of speach. Yet at the sametime there was a small part of her that couldn't help but realize that they seemed to have made a habit of apologizing for everything they said or did no matter how great or small.
The thought cause a hint of a smile to cross her features as she found herself unable to look away from his gaze.
"...It's alright, I think I understand what you meant..."
She said gently.
Her smile did something... Obi-Wan felt his anxieties disappear and a strange warming sensation overotok him. 'Oh...OK,' he replied. 'I'm glad...'
He felt foolish for having misinterpreted her, but at the same time, so serene when gazing into her eyes. It was almost as if he had been missing something that was only just newly found here, with her.
Sabe looked a little sheepish to his reply as she fell silent finding herself growing a little lost in his gaze. She knew she should probably say something but it was hard to formulate a thought when words suddenly seemed so cluttering by comparison to the silent thoughts that were being conveyed in his eyes. The decoy only wished she could understand what it was the Jedi's peaceful blue orbs were saying as it just seemed within her reach and yet just beyond touch.
Whatever it was Sabe knew one thing was for certain there was something in them that was meant for her to see and yet not just yet. Like two blue jeweled lockets that held a secret within that would not open for her until the moment was right.
If only this moment was the right one she wistfully wondered to herself not daring to look away now yet knowing she would be unable to do so even if she tried.
Obi-Wan didn't realise he was staring at her, nor did it register that she was equally matching his stare, nor indeed did he realise just how long they were gazing at each other in a rather serene silence that was in no way awkward or uncomfortable.
The peaceful understanding and inquisitive investigation via studious glances was cut short when one of the other handmaidens intervened.
'Pardon me, my lady,' said Eirtaé upon entrance. She took note of the way the Jedi was looking at the decoy queen and that she returned the look most fervently. Needless to say, this did not in any way sit well with Eirtaé. She couldn't help giving the padawan Jedi an incredulous look before focusing on her fellow handmaiden.
Since if had not registered with Obi-Wan that they had been staring at each other, he looked at the handmaiden quite innocently, unaware of anything having been inappropriate.
Time seemed to move a crawl and the universe seemed to pause for Sabe who quietly returned his studious gaze with an ease and comfortability she couldn't possibly reconize for what it truly was.
All she could possibly comprehend was that before her was someone who truly understood her. Someone who shared her views and hopes for the future. One who upheld all that she viewed as sacred. A friendship built on mutual interests and codes of honour.
However as she studied him in pensive and peaceful silence Sabe lost track of time and for a moment the sense of her location only to be brought back to fierce reality as she heard Eirtae's words. Sabe casted her friend a brief glance her own expression mirroring Obi-Wan's for a moment till she noticed the incredulous expression worn on the handmaiden's features.
While she knew that they had done nothing wrong Sabe couldn't say how long they had been studying each other in silence. But if Eirtae's expression was any evidence, that it had to have been long enough to draw some unwanted attention. Yet even so Sabe still couldn't quite understand why that was regarded in such an unfavorable light. After all there were moments when even Padme and herself would have comfortable pauses between discussions. Although of course it was nothing this peaceful or calming but the essense was simuliar enough for the niave decoy not to regard as anything inappropriate. Yet all the same her cheeks warmed in response to her friends expression as she politely spoke.
"Yes, Eirtae what is it?"
Though try as she might to sound calm and casual she couldn't deny the hint of embarassment and slight confusion that seemed to linger in her voice.
Eirtaé really did not need to speak with Sabé. She had actually been looking for Padmé who had disappeared once again, but noting the two nearly empty cups of tea and the kettle, was suspicious of just what in the name of the gods was going on in the refectory between Miss Decoy Queen and Mr. Padawan Jedi.
'Rabé was looking for you, Your Majesty. We need to touch up your makeup too,' she added as politely as she could muster, pointing to her own lips in reference to the now smudged lipstick on Sabé's. 'And if there is anything pressing you need to speak with the Jedi about, Master Qui-Gon will be back soon.' She couldn't resist adding that.
Obi-Wan registered disapproval from the blonde handmaiden, uncertain as to its origin. The mention of Qui-Gon seemed flippant as well and he couldn't help bowing his head as if he had been slapped across the face.
Sabe rose to her feet politely at Eirtae's words as she could only imagine Rabe having a panic attack upon not being able to locate Sabe in the first place. However she promptly remembered her guise having realized her 'sister' wasn't aware of the fact Obi-Wan knew of her true identity. Noting Eirtae's delicate motion to her lip Sabe eyes drifted to the cup on the table as she took note of the perfect imprints left on it's edges.
Nodding politely she put on her best Queen face as she offered her reply.
"Thank-you, I will join you both shortly."
However all semblence of control seemed to slip off her carefully crafted mask of royalty at her friend's flippant remark. Instantly her hands clutched into fists as she stiffened slightly. She couldn't explain where the fierce need to defend the Jedi Padawan came from but it was too overpowering to ignore and soon she found herself replying in rather cool tones.
"Both Master Jinn and Jedi Kenobi are representatives to the Supreme Chancellor himself and are deserving of the respect and responsibility this honoured position entails.
It would be most wise and prudent to keep this in mind, handmaiden Eirtae."
Though she hadn't meant to sound so harsh the sight of Obi-Wan's bowed head and the feeling of offence that seemed to radiate of him did little to help her temperment.
At Sabé's outburst, it took almost all of Eirtaé's willpower not to snicker. She bowed her head to hide her growing smile. She's got it bad...she thought. Soon as he finds out you're not the real queen, he won't like you anymore! 'Yes, milady.' She made a small curtsey and left the room so she would be free to laugh. Sabé and the padawan...priceless...Wait until Rabé hears...or better yet, Padmé!
Obi-Wan finally looked at Sabé again as he rose to his feet. He didn't know what to think, except that he liked that she had spoken up for him where it had not been his place...not that he would have anyway...but still...He had to acknowledge that it felt good to have an ally, someone on his side for once...someone who valued his thoughts and opinions...someone who understood him.
Of course now he couldn't find words, so fittingly, he just looked at her, hoping she could make sense of what he was trying to convey, feeling a bit shy in the process.
Sabe studied her friend as she bowed her head noting her eyes dance with some sort of amusement that wasn't there before. Had she not been in such a position to play teh role of the queen Sabe would have raised a brow in confusion. One minute she was borderline rude the next she was amused. Just what could it mean? Once Eirtae had left Sabe shook her head slightly in confusion as if clearing her thoughts of it all.
Once alone she cast Obi-Wan an apologetic look as he rose to his feet.
"I'm sorry Jedi Kenobi, I thought perhaps my friend would have learnt her lesson the first time. But it would seem she is in need of being reminded of her manners."
Her eyes settled on his once more and Sabe couldn't help but feel her cheeks warm slighlty to the silent but fervant gaze he gave her. On the surface as always it was gentle and peaceful but beneath it carried so much more then words could ever once more say. There was gratitude there though for what she couldn't say after all Eirtae was being rude and deserved to be spoken too as well as a mutual understanding a basis of friendship and something else that the Decoy couldn't quite put her finger on. Although it wasn't to say she didn't like it, it was once more just the feeling of something she wasn't meant to understand, at least not yet.
Feeling both humbled and more then a little touched by his silent response and the million words it carried Sabe smiled shyly before bowing her head slightly in quiet understanding and humble appriciation. It felt good not to be alone, to have another who saw her for who she really was not what she represented.

Elsewhere Rabe quietly prepared the small dressing table for the touch-up's she knew SAbe would be needing shortly. Unlike Padme who had enough sense not to mess up her make-up the principle handmaiden seemed to have a knack for smudging her lipstick smearing the white cover up and getting chips on her nailpolish. It wasn't that Sabe was untrained for the position demanded of her it was just she was far too boyish for such things and the moment her guise came off it showed.
Sighing deeply she waited to Eirtae to return hopefully with said principle handmaiden in tow or better yet Padme as the gods only knew where she dissappeared off to yet again. Between Sabe's high maintaince and Padme's dissappearing act Rabe was about ready to pull out her hair.
'You don't have to apologise,' Obi-Wan said, knowing she had to leave soon and feeling slightly reluctant about having to part ways though he didn't know why. 'And thank you once more, for the tea.'
It was something trivial, tea that is, but at the same time, it meant something more. Though what exactly it represented, he couldn't be sure. He bowed deeper than necessary for his gratitude, since it was not only about the tea, but her defense and support and the conversation...and...
Sabe furrowed her brow slightly in confusion at his words as she shook her head slightly.
"What she said was completely inappropriate and hardly something that should be spoken to a representive to the Supreme Chancellor himself."
She wanted to express the fact she rather enjoyed his conversation and in many ways (if not all) prefered speaking to him over his master. He was far more approachable and carried an air of wisdom that seemed far more powerful and vibrant than the older Jedi though for what reason she could not say.
But as he thanked her for the tea Sabe bowed her head in reply finding herself oddly missing his presence already though he still remained near.
"It was my pleasure Obi-Wan."
She said gently in reply not even realizing she had once more refered to him by his given name over title. Quietly she turned to leave though it was obvious she was hesitant to as well as though hoping somehow she could stretch out these brief moments for as long as she could but still unaware as to why that was. Instead she just regarded it as a sign of budding friendship that was doomed to end before it had a chance to begin.
Obi-Wan bowed again, in response to her bow and felt a rush of warmth when she said his name. Sabé, he thought as he looked into her dark eyes.
When she turned to leave, he followed her. Her hand rested on the doorframe after she palmed it open and he accidentally touched her hand on his way out. That spark coursed through him once more, as if he had run across a carpeted floor and then touched an electric source, but the intensity was more inviting than deterring. 'Sorry,' he said automatically, ducking out of the room and heading in the opposite direction from her.
He turned back though, to look at her once more, offering a kind smile before going to the cockpit to see if he could spot Qui-Gon returning with the boy.
She couldn't explain why her heart warmed as she found her eyes settling onto his blue orbs once more but there was something about them that touched her soul in that moment. But forcing herself out of her thoughts Sabe quietly yet reluctantly turned to part ways with the Jedi before her. Gently she slipped a hand to the frame of the door as she always did as her other hand moved to enter the code that would grant them exit.
But as she was about to step out she felt the strange electric sensation dancing on her fingers once more and quickly she glanced to catch his hand drawing away as he apologized. Blushing once more she bowed her head slightly in reply her eyes soft as she shook her head slightly unsure how to explain the tingling that remained despite the absense of his fingers. Or the fact the shock experienced was not painful or shocking but rather pleasant, although confusing at the strange and unrelated (or so she thought) foreign emotions that surfaced in response.
"It's quite alright."
She softly said in reply before pausing as she couldn't help but watch him for a moment as he headed down the hall in the direction she wished she could be going in. Yet as he departed deep within beneath the concious of her thoughts a small wistful thought is felt. If only he could just turn back so I may have one last glance her heart whispered unbenownst to Sabe's thoughts.
As if he heard the silent wish the Jedi glanced back and offered a kind smile that caused her to shyly smile in reply before she too turned away. Though she headed towards the Queen's quarters knowing it was time to prepare for what was certain to come Sabe couldn't help but feel completely at peace with their situation. Though she regarded it as an inner calm her heart knew better and from it's hiding place deep within Sabe's niave and innocent soul it began to sing the beginning notes of a symphony that would eventually be reconized as love.
