Ellen Parsons: Played by Rose Byrne
A brilliant law school grad determined to do good in the
world, Ellen Parsons has overcome her working class background to become
the new protégé of legal legend Patty Hewes. But it's a complicated relationship.
And as the series progresses, Ellen realises that 'doing good' and 'being
nice' are completely different things.
After Patty handpicks Ellen to be a first-year Associate at the high-profile
law firm, 'Hewes & Associates,' life will never be the same for either one
of them. Ellen, newly engages to her boyfriend, David Connor, is thirlled
to join the ranks and be trained under Patty and Patty's trusted Senior
Associate, Tom Shayes. But Ellen soon realises that the price of success
may be much higher than what she's willing to pay.

Says Rose:'…she’s still kind of getting formed in a lot of ways. But she’s
very instinctive. I think she’s really smart. I think she’s
kind of a little naïve. You know, I mean, she graduates from law school
and she’s applying all this stuff she’s learned into the real world. And
it’s exhilarating, and the adrenaline is fantastic and amazing. But I don’t
think she really realizes the sacrifices she’s going to have to make, and
the world that she’s in now.'
Currently, the focus of 'Hewes & Associates' attention is a class action
lawsuit targetting the allegedly corrupt Arthur Frobisher, one of the country's
wealthiest CEOs. Patty, on behalf of her clients, is attempting to bankrupt
and personally destroy Frobisher. As Patty battles with Frobisher and his
attorney, Ray Fiske, Ellen Parsons will be front and centre, witnessing
just what it takes to win at all costs.
' I mean, at the moment, I guess she's not in the position right now to
start a family, my character. But, definitely, with this - you know, with
her fiancé, I think their relationship is really tested, it will
be tested during the first season as to, you know, whether it's going to
be - whether it'll survive or not. Because the job is just so all-consuming.
But it's a great thing to be explored, you know, because it's such a - women
have, you know - obviously are in such positions of power nowadays, and
have complete, you know, equality with men in a lot of - you know, within
the business world and within most things. So it's a really - it's a great
thing to discuss. And about whether they - you know, how do you juggle both
things, how do you raise a family? And, you know, do you do it well? And
is it - you know, it's very interesting stuff to think about, especially,
you know, for me being a young woman. So, it's great.
'...[Ellen's] behavior is going to start changing little by little, and
very subtly. It’s not going to be like a hammer in your face. But, I think,
just little things that she starts to do that I’m not even sure she knows.
Subconsciously, she starts to change ... in little ways. And it’s going
to be really interesting to see, you know, exactly who she is by the end.'
