Her hands were one of the many things that made her so unique to him; one
of the many mysteries that clung to her person. Like everything about her,
it invited him to learn more about her even though the young prince knew it
would only to leave him with more questions than answers.
It wasn’t that her hands were soft and smooth like a noblewoman’s
rather because it was just the opposite. Her fingers and palms were marred
by long hours of hard work a silent reminder that House Naberrie’s laws
against child labour wasn’t as effective as they’d believe.
His hands too were calloused and were silent reminder of the fact that despite
his nobility Anakin would always remain an outsider. He could still remember
his mother chastising him about his hands when he began his formal training
at the Jedi Temple. How she would constantly remind him that he should take
better care of them lest they be forever marred.
What proper young lady would want to hold a hand that was hardened and rough?
The young prince had once reminded his mother that his hands were just that
way because of his long hours training with his brother to become a Jedi.
The distant and sad look that came to the Empress’s eyes spoke volumes
and the matter was never brought up again.
Anakin initially wasn’t bothered by his less than soft palms, for who
really cared about such a small detail? But as he grew fond of the Naboo queen
to whom he was betrothed, the young prince couldn’t help but notice
that his hands really were nothing like the nobles of his Mother’s court.
Though he lived a life of luxury, his hands were worn and calloused, aged
beyond their years.
Upon occasion when he was able to spend time with the Naboo queen Anakin
would find his eyes drifting to her smooth and fragile hands. Remembering
his mother’s words about his own he discovered that this once forgettable
detail wasn’t so forgettable anymore. It was in this discovery that
held the truth about his relationship with the Naboo queen, but since he wasn’t
one to dwell on metaphors its true meaning was lost.
Today, for the first time, he slipped his hand into Dormé’s
own; her left hand in his right. It was a simple gesture that held a silent
truth that neither would be able to comprehend at this stage of their relationship.
However the young prince wasn’t entirely unaware of the silent connection
between his dear friend and himself. Her hand fit perfectly in his own and
it was in that moment he knew he had found the one who would forever hold
his heart.
