Qui-Gon Jinn, Jedi Master

The maverick Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jinn, had many issues with the Jedi Council over the years. He had a tendency to help those in need, even if it was not his particular 'mission'. After completing his training under Count Dooku, he spent many years on solo missions, not feeling ready to take on a Padawan. Sometime during his missions, he had a son, Obi-Wan whose surname was given to him by his mother to obscure his familial ties. It is unclear whether Obi-Wan's mother was in fact another Jedi. Qui-Gon took the boy to be raised in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

On orders from the Empire, Qui-Gon was sent to Tatooine to aid in the suffering of the people under the Hutts. After rescuing Princess Shmi Bhraj, who had hoped they had come to restore the monarchy, the pair fell in love and during their time together, Anakin was conceived. He told Shmi their relationship could be nothing more than what it was and that he could not be there for her the way he wanted to, but that he would always love her. He told her he would come back to her someday, though it wouldn't end up being for another nine years. It hurt that she had to marry, but Qui-Gon knew Emperor Cliegg was a good man and would be able to support Shmi in the ways he could not as a Jedi. She would have a comfortable life, the life she deserved to have.

After nine years of separation, Qui-Gon finally returned to Tatooine, this time with his twenty-four-year-old son and Padawan learner, Obi-Wan. Shmi teased him about Obi-Wan's stoic nature to which he replied Obi-Wan got it from his mother. Shmi proceeded to enquire about the boy's mother and he told her of the woman who had died before he met Shmi, painful though it was. Soon after meeting Anakin and running a midicholorian scan, he revealed that Anakin was the Chosen One of an ancient Jedi prophecy and that the boy must train to become a Jedi. Though a bloodline could be easily hidden, Force sensitivity could not be hidden from the Jedi Order.

Qui-Gon died at the hands of a Sith Lord, Darth Maul on Naboo before Naboo was freed from the invasion of the Trade Federation.
